Excalibur Takes an Amazing Buck

2008-01-31

It's no secret that Bill Troubridge loves hunting in Ohio. Ohio has been a great crossbow hunting state for years and there's no denying the quality of the deer they're growing there.

Recently, Bill went down south to hunt with our friends at Team Backwoods in sourthern Ohio. The timing was perfect. Middle of November, peak of the rut... it doesn't get any better. The big bucks were tending does and they were seeing a lot of deer activity.

But how good was the hunting going to be? Sure the deer are active during the rut, but they can be a bit unpredictable.

So, with everything prepared, Bill and Dan Wallace (from Team Backwoods) set up in a treestand over an open field planted with winter wheat. Before long, a small buck came rushing in, nose to the ground and milled around right beneath the treestand. While the boys were watching this young buck, Bill spotted a monster buck crusing the field and on a path to bring him right in front of the treestand.

The buck continued through the field, and the boys stopped him broadside directly in front of them. Bill sighted the crosshairs in the boiler plate and squeezed the trigger, placing a firebolt in just the right spot.

The deer ran over 300 yards and took his last breath in the middle of the field, making recovery a breeze.

It was the second time in two days they had seen this deer. Everything came together to make this a great hunt in Southern Ohio.

This hunt, and many, many more can be seen on Excalibur's Huntin' the Backwoods as well as on Team Backwoods Whitetail DVD - Back In The Woods 4. Check out the video from the hunt below.
