How many days have you bow hunted for Deer this season?

Post by bellerivercrossbowhunter » Wed Dec 06, 2017 5:38 pm

Just sitting here pondering for a moment about deer hunting.

Due to our limited tags here in Ontario I didn't bow hunt here. I saved it for Muzzleloader instead and hunted 5 days. Can't complain I was blessed to shoot a nice mature buck on day 2.. :)

I bow hunted in Michigan for 3 days and took a nice big doe. :)

So 8 days of deer hunting I still did good and my 2018 meat supply is in good shape. To be in a meat crisis would not sit well with me..lol

Seems odd that I have alot invested in bow hunting gear for 3 sits. I hope to put more time in next year. Thats the plan!!

I'm close to my hunting area and have been out 23 times. I'll hunt until Jan-31st when bow deer closes. I really like the late season.

Most years those days would number 100 or more.
Due to my ongoing eye issues, this year they number three.
And that my Friends, is the absolute most frustrating thing I have had to deal with in many years.
In fact, it SUCKS Royally!

Here's Hoping they can get a handle on the damn thing following next week's (the third) open eye surgery...
Looking forward to better things... we HOPE!

I sat 4 hours shot a nice doe opening day.
Went out for a day during the shotgun hunt trying to get my neighbors kid his first deer. Second day out he shot a nice doe 20 min out of the truck.

Best & worse season combined for me. I have had some good sits, but passed on more small bucks than any previous years. I have seen many doe, but zero good shots presented to me. I have seen 6 nice bucks, 3 on neighboring farm, but well within killing range, did not shoot! 2 during gun season, but way before legal shooting time, and one out past where I would shoot with a crossbow. Not complaining, I had a blast! Still some time left, and glass half full!

Not as much as most years, but we still have a month of late season hunting. I actually enjoy the late season best. :D

This year I tagged out on my fifth time in the stand - 11th of October in our early bow. But since I "party hunt" and one of my buddies still has a tag we have been out another eight times since then and a couple days in the rifle season.

I do keep journals and I tend to bow hunt (for deer) 15 to 20 times during our 92 day deer season (can use bow during the entire period if you choose), and 2 or 3 days of the rifle season.

Once it gets into December I choose my days - I'm getting soft and won't freeze in the stand (even with decent gear, hand warmers, electric insoles etc).

But also fit in a solid week of moose/bear hunting (get moose tags consistently every second year) and bear only in the off year. Plus spend nine days upland bird hunting just before deer opens - but all of that is done with rifle/shotgun. I have my one archery moose (recurve) and much prefer to hunt moose with a rifle - they don't wander away as far :)

Due to ms progression with walking and not being able to hold both my crossbow or shotgun with not a stand. I hunted maybe including shotgun season if I am lucky 2 maybe 3 hours . That will change next year hopefully

Couple years ago, when I retired, I only missed 6 days from Oct. 1st to Jan. 1st. Last few years I miss about 10 days. Very understanding wife.

Ya sucks being in Ontario don't it. I used to get 3 tags now just one and I missed the lottery for doe tag so just bucks. I have sat over 25 days and still have a couple weeks left, would have been more but wife made me go out of country for 2 weeks. I have let over 30 deer pass in front of me waiting on a nice 10 point. Well after all that I finally got him under 20 yards last week and proceeded to bounce an arrow off his back as he ducked the string or I just shot too high ! Now he knows something is up so probably go back to being nocturnal. I would normally shoot a doe towards the end of December but not tag for one this year so could be my first year in a long time with no deer meat in the freezer :( !
