5 times with the muzzleloader and 7-8 times out with the bow. 2 decent bucks and a doe down. I’m done for the year

I hunted deer 15 times, all on Vancouver Island, and mostly with my Excalibur Exomax. On the 15th hunt, I connected with an old 2X2 buck with hardly a tooth left in its head. He must have been good at gumming his food as there was quite a lot of fat on the carcass. Despite its age, the meat is tender. With this deer and a buck antelope taken in Alberta, I had enough meat and stopped hunting for the year.

This has been my best and most active deer season in five years. I deer hunted a total of one and a half days for Vancouver Island blacktails and loved every second....and never fired a shot at a deer. I saw a good number of does and fawns but only bucks were on the menu. I got to meet and hang out with my buddy Ironoggin and do some shooting on the range (that part was a little frustrating....then embarrassing   ). Those of you that get a real season, count your blessings.

This year I took off the last week of October and stayed until the 2nd week of November. I did not realize in Missouri you can only camp in one place for two weeks straight then you have to move 5 miles. I bow hunted ten days out of the two weeks before the gun hunters arrived and took 3 does and 1 buck. Hunted opening weekend of rifle season and killed a button buck; forest agent told me I had to leave that ended my gun season. Went on a managed hunt (muzzleoader) and took a doe. Total 12 days and 6 deer. I try to do the majority of my hunting each year around the end of October and beginning of November (before gun season) as the rut is normally in full swing then.

2 days for me this bow season in my tree stand. My area is a cedar swamp that doesn’t have many deer until the cold and snow hit and then they seem to winter in there. I lucked out on my second hunt this month. I usually put in about 7 or so days in December.
