Little Freak Nasty

Post by steveOh » Fri Dec 29, 2017 3:30 pm

On November 20, 2017, I arrowed this buck with my Micro 335, and upon recovery I noticed that he had an odd shaped rack and a bad left eye.
Image

It looked like the eye was missing, and there was green puss oozing out from the socket. I also noticed that there was what looked like a small portion of bone protruding from the skin between the eye socket and the left base. I thought that maybe it was a part of a broken antler that was lodged in the socket. I couldn’t wait to get the head back from the meat processor and begin creating a Euro mount.
Image

After I removed the hide from the skull I discovered that it wasn’t a piece of antler sticking out, but that a part of the eye socket itself was broken and bent upward and out of the skin.

There is an extra layer of bone above the eye socket and it goes down the side. My guess is that some kind of trauma happened years ago, whether it was hit by a Buick or got into a fight with another buck I don’t know! I do know one thing though, deer are some tough critters, and that their healing power is amazing!

Congrats great buck and story. I have gotten a couple oddballs over the years ,honestly l would rather have a oddball racked buck any day over a perfect one. There truely a unique treasure of their own.

Funny how some deer survive and strive with a serious injury.
But i have yet to find a deer with a body scar or trauma, which suggest to me, at least northern deer tend to die from injuries more often than not .
My experience only skinning around 20-30 deer and im sure someone who has dressed more deer will have something to offer.

That was the perfect deer to harvest for many reasons .
That rack is much more interesting to me than most racks twice its size.
And that deer was having a hard life nice harvest.

Thats amazing. That was one tough buck. I wonder if his odd antlers were a result of genetics or the injury. I'm thinkin the injury.

That's a great job on the euro mount and one very unique buck! That is some serious mass around those bases. Congrats on a trophy!

Look at the bases on that Freak! Awesome trophy. Deer are such resilient critters.

You never know what you’ll find when you get a euro mount back. My wife’s first buck had two extra teeth that grew out of the palate of the mouth, (the roof). They were sharp little buggers, like fangs. The taxidermist has never seen anything like it but it’s likely some sort of lost evolutionary trait or a recessive gene. :?:
