3 questions

Post by Troubleshooter »

Beïng a beginner in the crossbowworld, i have a few (3) simple questions...

I was reading this line on the forum:

'For correct foc, you use a heavy insert up front or a heavy broadhead and not both.'

Question 1: what means FOC? I see this a lot on this forum, but don't know where this stands for...(google said: Free Of Charge, but i think this is not the case)

Queston 2: Can't you combinate a heavy insert with a heavy broadhead and if so, why not?

Question 3: i using bowstring wax, but can i also use just 'Vaseline' for this?

Thanks for your help. Hope to have better questions next time...

1 - FOC ...... Front of Center ..... which is the weight (%) in front of the center (balance point) of the arrow.
- there is a sweet spot with not too much or too little % of weight.

2 - Yes you can combine both a heavy insert & heavy broadhead, but it might make your arrow too much FOC (too much of the % of weight in front of the center point of the arrow).

3 - Not sure if you can use Vaseline or not, but do not think it would harm unless it stays too moist and collects dirt or debree.

....I am wondering if petroleum jelly would degrade the composition of the string or serving causing a dangerous situation?

Petroleum jelly stinks, so don't put anything stinky on your bow when hunting animals with a exceptional sense of smell.

In my experience you can't increase speed by making the rail slick. However, I do use a dry lube product called Arch Oil 2400. It does make the rail slick, but since it is dry it keeps the rail clean and no debris collects like it does with some kind of snot like product.

Back to the 'foc'- story..

For example:

If i use 20 inch firebolts and remove the aluminium insert and replace it for a 100 grain brass insert in combination with a 125 grain spitfire.

Is this a good combination or is the front to heavy for the arrow now and better take a 100 grain broadhead....
