A season to remember.

Post by DuckHunt »

Normally I have taken four or five deer by this point in the season, but it has been a slow year for my trigger finger for a couple reasons. It has been slow mainly because I have been concentrating on putting my daughter on some deer. She has killed a couple in the past, but hadn't deer hunted with me in a few years due to schedules and the high cost on non-resident licenses in Virginia.

She is having a good year. So far she has taken this small seven point with the Excalibur.

Then she took a small fork-horn and a doe with a muzzleloader. I've been putting her in position so well that every deer she has taken has ran over to my stand and fell in bow range of me. Its downright odd.

I've been out a few times on my own, but haven't had any luck. I have seen a few small bucks but nothing I wanted to shoot. Since my daughter is filling the freezer, I've been able to be more selective in my targets.

This morning due to a scheduling snafu she had to work, so she skipped the opening morning of rifle season. As I was walking in this morning I almost climbed up into her stand, but decided to head on downwind of it to my stand. That ended up being an excellent decision. Yesterday they cut the two corn fields that were about a 1/4 mile away. This morning they cut the larger one 3/4 of a mile away. These three fields have really made our hunting tough since they hold a lot of the deer away from our land. Having the fields cut and the additional hunters in the woods got everything stirred up and moving around to new areas.

To make a long story short, I saw two doe and five buck between 7:00am and 7:30am. I took one doe and two nice bucks. I had to run two bucks off of the doe I had killed once I climbed out of my stand. I spent the next three hours getting them out of the woods and all day today processing them. I'll continue that task tomorrow. The 8pt was a bruiser of a deer. The 10pt was a good buck, but the 8pt was a load.
