An unexpected harvest!
Yes Virginia - Tennessee has a fall archery turkey season! And I'm glad they do!. I was sitting in my ground blind this afternoon sweltering in 88 degree heat when a drove of turkeys came out into the soybean field. (I should explain the crop in the this field failed for some reason so the beans weren't high enough to hide the turkeys.) I knew there were turkeys on the property but never considered hunting them intentionally and I sure never expected to get an opportunity for a crossbow shot.
As they fed toward me one of the gobblers separated himself from the group a bit. He got to 25 yards away, clear of the grass and short soybean plants, and turned broadside. The Assassin sent my Grim Reaper tipped arrow right to the mark - Yes! He really didn't go anywhere. He tried to fly straight up but that didn't work since the off-side wing was completely shattered by the broadhead. It was all over pretty fast. I was impressed with how quickly the Grim Reaper did its work. The rest of the birds milled around for a bit and finally moved off so I could get my trophy!! The spurs were right at 1 inch long; the beard was 11 inches. I was thrilled - my first turkey with archery equipment of any kind.
