OT: Canoe Score!

Post by janesy »

Been loosely looking for a canoe for back woods shield swamp moose hunting. Last fall I picked up a well used square stern Scott "Mini-freighter" 14' fiberglass. Turns out it needs a fair bit of fiberglass work, and knowing myself... This project is going to take more time that I have alotted for. But it's a perfect canoe, and it deserves the work. And they are bloody expensive to replace and hard to find.

Saw an ad late last week in the local rags for a "canoe" best offer. Figured I'd give them a call and get the details. Turns outs it's a 20 plus year old Sportspal 14' square stern with original floor and sponsons. Handful of small dents and scratches, but no holes, no leaks and no damage! Hung up the phone and drove North!
Old boy up north was clearing out and getting rid of all his stuff to downsize. Had a great conversation with him and he was happy it's going to be used for Moose hunting. Out of respect for him and his good will, I'll keep the price quiet, but it cost roughly a set of custom arrows and a new string!

I'm not a super sportspal fan, in fact I think they are pretty fugly. But this will work perfectly with my trolling motor on it and let me slip quietly into the swamp. It's growing on me quickly and I'm getting excited for the ice to leave the lake.

So here's the time machine Sportspal!

I had a radison years ago very similar. I just plain wore it out. Great canoe. I had a side mount trolling motor on mine for long hauls and duck hunting....hell l used that thing for everything.

That is a canoe you will grow to love kind of like an ugly mutt that is the best dog you ever owned.
