Re: Practice close shots

I missed a turk 2 years ago at close range..it was about 8 yards away. i never dreamed it would run away but it did  I did the same thing. Long story short, after calling in a pair of jakes I put my bolt clear over the back of the closest one - from my scoped Phoenix. I darn near had the Pho...

TPM wrote:Marc, great to see ya posting again! As for deer, they're always on my mind, along with grouse of course. Lots of 3D shoots over the next couple of months. Hope to see you out some time!
Thanks TPM! I've been away too long. Are you & Vix going to the 3D at wcbowmen this weekend?

Re: Anyone else fired up for deer yet?

Welcome kenspiel! Which PSE are you using - I just picked up a Brute X (my first compound) and am looking forward to trying it this year. As for broad heads, I shot 125gr Griz Tricks, and found that they hit the same as field points when shot from my Phoenix. Maybe I'm a sucker for slick advertising...

Re: Anyone else fired up for deer yet?

That is some sage advice - thanks everyone. I am going to try a dose of 3D archery. Hopefully that will relieve my symptoms, at least temporarily.

Anyone else fired up for deer yet?

I don't know what has come over me. We are barely into June - bass season isn't even open yet - and I find myself already looking longingly at the month of October on the calendar (the bow opener here in Ontario).

Is it just me? Am I the only crazy one here? Is there a cure for this? :D

I've gone hybrid

Thanks all for the feedback and suggestions. I've gone with a hybrid...a homemade ladder stand to get me up to a hang-on. I built two 8' ladders that nest together: the lower portion is 15" wide while the upper is 12". Big thanks to Ger for the demo and suggestions! http://farm3.static.fli...

leaving hang-ons on

One more question, this time for the hang-on users. Is there any issue with leaving a hang-on up all season? I'm considering a Gorilla Kong that uses a seatbelt-style strap for securing it to the tree, but Gorilla lists leaving the stand in a tree for more than two weeks "a problem" in the...

Phoenix_Tom, I believe the reason for the archery restriction during ML/SG weeks is to limit the number of hunters "in the bush". I think safety is the driver for this policy.

walking away

how serious is the issue of treestands walking away, especially in sw ontario? I guess there are a lot of factors involved in the theft rate, like the number of hunters using the immediate area, and public vs. private land. Considering this, even though Im the only hunter with permission to hunt on ...

Good points Dave. To clarify: I'm mainly looking for a "raise it and leave it" solution for the entire season. That's why I was initially looking at a ladder stand, whether its bought or built. Should I choose a hang-on, it will still be in the same tree for at least 80% of the season - ha...

Crispy brings up a good point about the buddy stands. They're pricier but I know my kids - while a bit young now - will be eager to join me up in the stand soon enough. I'm starting to flip-flop on the idea of a ladder stand. It may be that the portability that a hang-on provides may be better for m...

school me on ladder stands (please!)

I'm thinking about moving to an elevated stand for deer hunting in SW Ontario. I don't see a lot of value in a climber or hang-on stand because I don't really need a lot of portability, so that makes a ladder stand look attractive. I'd appreciate knowing what to look for...are they all pretty much t...
