Re: ATV loading a deer buy yourself

I don't gut deer, not even while cleaning. Skin, remove shoulders, back straps, debone hams, get tenderloins out, remove neck meat and brisket if not bloodshot. A matter of preference and tradition I suppose. Exception is to gut if it's going to be a while before cleaning. A nice bbq hog, now that's...

Re: Meat prices

Something I'm seeing here, in addition to higher meat prices, is that it's more difficult to run down beef or pork fat to go in hamburger and sausage. I just end up buying a boston butt or pork loin to mix in. There has been some lower quality meat as well, barely fit to eat.

Re: Ammo

There is ammo available online. Check ammoseek.com and gunbroker.com. It's not cheap though, and you can't be too selective. There is a basspro in my normal travel routes and I just kept stopping to check until they had some 270 I could live with. Then got 5 boxes, which was the limit per person. Go...

On the subject, does anyone have any good recommendations for books on WWII by Canadian Authors?

Re: OT: December 7 1941

Haven't checked in for a while. Unfortunately, bow season in Florida coincides with the deadline of my largest contract every year, so the excalibur is growing old hanging on the wall in the gun closet. Good to see some old faces though. Yamamoto could see past the arrogance and knew what the score ...

Re: Risks To Our Environment And Hunting

My niece called me one evening after she had been to an earth day event and begged me not to cut down any more trees, as I am a forester and supervise a lot of commercial logging. Much of it is ridiculous, for example someone who is protesting the removal of trees for the construction of an ...

Re: Ticks on deer

The ticks are a major problem where I hunt in Florida during archery season and a big reason why I haven't bow hunted much lately. They have usually gone mostly dormant by rifle season, then are back in high gear by spring turkey. I have treated corn with ivemec to put out for deer during the early ...

In Florida you just about have to buy something if you want a place to hunt.

Re: freezing deer meat

Nearly all of mine that is not cooked while fresh goes into sausage or hamburger. The bulk sausage and hamburger are put into packing bags with a packing kit. A friend that worked in a butcher shop got me started doing it like that and it was life changing. Links go into vacuum sealer.

Re: Anyone want to share their jerky marinades

I tried several jerky marinades and seasonings a couple of years ago when I got my electric smoker. My favorite was Dale's. Only marinade for 2-4 hours and no other seasoning needed. Lowery's cajun was great also but I haven't been able to find it again. I found most marinades to have too much sugar...

Re: Smokers ?

I picked up a cajun injector electric smoker a couple of years ago when cabelas had them on sale. It's a good entry level smoker for a beginner as it's super easy and almost fool proof, easy to clean also. I do deer jerky, turkeys, and chickens which everyone loves. Just started doing smoked link de...

Re: Expanded my my Culinary techniques

The kid and I started making our own smoked sausage this year. It's turned out good but I can see that there will be a lot of fine tuning to do through experimentation and trial and error.

Re: Does attracting Bucks

When the bucks are rutting hard you can't hardly pay a pack of does to hit my corn piles because the bucks have them staked out waiting to ambush the does. It's always the younger bucks that are the most aggressive, with the older bucks just slipping by occasionally in the background.

Re: Small hand held GPS

I've had a couple of the Garmin etrex handhelds. I found them very simple to use and performed adequately. A good economical entry level handheld. I would suggest getting one with a base map and the app with the topo maps that you install on computer, and the computer cable. As has been mentioned, y...

Re: Story from Ranger's Station

"I really fear what the world will be for my Grand kids." Getting more and more that you have to buy a small hunting tract for yourself or else you are at the mercy of others. Was out yesterday inspecting a timber property for a customer, riding around on an atv, and on the way back to the...
