Re: blinds

I hunt ground pretty much exclusively. It somewhat limits your 'field of fire', unless you clear good lanes beforehand, but I have no problem being undetected. I wear a leafy anorak, and use natural branches and stuff to create a very minimal 'blind'. The trick, I have found, is to be perfectly stil...

Re: Overall xbow weight or mass.

Gerald, Funny you should suggest the recurve. Once I get 40lb or so in freezer, I move on to Great Northern bushbow. Much harder to connect, but such a pleasure to wander the woods with it.

Overall xbow weight or mass.

I ground hunt exclusively and a lot of it is spot-and-stalk. I find that my Excal 330 gets awful heavy after a half day's walking up and down the woods. This got me thinking about a weight reduction plan. Coupla questions: Anybody compared weight of wood stock vs factory? Anybody tried reducing rail...

Re: spoiled meat

Other more experienced hunters may disagree with me, but we never let an animal lay any longer than necessary. So unless it was a poor shot (happens to everyone sooner or later I reckon) and deer wanders far, we track and field dress and usually skin within a couple of hours of killing at most. I fi...

Yeah, weird season in VA too. Too warm , deer active at night and not moving as usual, full moon, late rut...

Re: Rage vs. Boltcutters

Medbill: If the point is not TOO buggered up, you can carefully file it and sharpen it back to near-original. The blades are generally not worth re-working imho and I just buy a pack of replacement blades (they usually look pretty rough after a pass-through into dirt). So in the long run, I manage t...

Re: Tree Harness

One last comment about climbing harnesses: Climbers fall all the time and back injuries are not generally an issue. Admittedly, the dynamics are different, and although there are rocks to hit, there's no stand/steps/metal stuff. So no, that I know of, conclusive studies have not been done. That said...

Re: Tree Harness

CT Hunter: No! Loops are for hanging on gear. Climbers tie-in by tying the rope around the actual harness at waist. There are a couple of harnesses that have ALL loops full-strength but that's not the norm. For ladder stands, what *I* recommend (not suggesting you do the same as you might die ;-): S...

Re: Do-It-Yourself Butcher???

We do all our own butchering. Not a big deal but it is a big time investment if you want really good meat. And THAT is the reason we do our own - it guarantees the quality of what we eat. We know exactly what we are making from field to table, we have full control over the aging, and we have almost ...

Re: Tree Harness

I have never understood the attachment point on the back.Construction safety harnesses are the same way. Once you fall you are pretty much "turtled". I have always assumed it is to protect the back and neck from injury On the climbing harness I assume you are attaching at the belt buckle ...

Re: Tree Harness

As a climber, I have always assumed industrial/construction harnesses connect at back, simply so that the tether is not in your way while working. I would MUCH rather be facing the tree/stand/rock/ice-wall when I fall, than to be tied in at back. Also if you were in a position where you need to lowe...

Re: Adapted peep sight

Very nice! I love peep sights for some reason... Similar but different: this past weekend I was shooting 50yd with a scoped deer rifle and a tang/peep rifle. My groups were the same (all within 1" of each other). I was pleasantly surprised! Of course out at 100, the scope was much much better, ...

Re: Crisis At The Canadian Border

Obama flawed? Yup. HillBill trust issues? Yup. But how in God's name anyone can look at what's coming and not see big biz, big industry, and big lies, is beyond me. And if you hunt public lands, sit tight and watch them revert to states - no more big guv'ment - so they can give mineral and other rig...

Re: Human Scents scares deer - old wives tale???

This past Sunday I sat in thick tall grass, no more than 10 yd from trail. About an hour before sunset, a nice doe casually walked, crossing right in front of me. She actually caught me off guard and xbow was on my lap, resting on outstretched legs (I was leaning against tree). As she hesitated a mo...
