Re: Griswald Lives - Merry Xmas to the Excal community

We had our 3 year old grandson over to help hang ornaments on our tree . The joy on his face was the best present we could ever receive.

Re: Finally got it done....

Congrats on your deer. Years ago I bought a cheap dent puller found a bolt that fit drilled and tapped the head and with 2 or 3 pops on the slide heads come right out . I usud to salvage lots of field points at the range stuck in wood frames.

Re: Felt like a "drug fix " to be in stand tonight

Re: Hunting Blunders. Asking for a friend.

After unloading all our gear I had to run the rental boat back to the marina. First part was straight into a 3ft chop. I forgot to change the tilt on the motor and as I got going a gust of wind stood the boat straight up and water started pouring in as I climbed the seats by the time the boat layed ...

Re: Fred bear

Fred was my hero after Robin hood. I bought a bear takedown in 67 and still shoot it occasionally. Just reread my book of his field notes several weeks ago. Killed my first bow buck with a polar ltd . Would have loved to share a campfire with him and hear his adventures.

Re: New season goals what's yours?

I plan to put a deer or two in the freezer and continue reducing the coyote population maybe a fall turkey. I have flocks of them feeding by at 20yds but always talk myself out of pulling the trigger thinking there may be a nice buck nearby. At 71yrs old I just feel privileged to spend time in the w...

Re: Your normal batch size

I usually keep 6 for practice and use the best 4for hunting. I limit myself to close shots on deer and have more issues with damaged broadheads than broken or lost bolts. I shot 4 deer and a coyote with the same bolt before I lost it on coyote pass through. I may find it with my metal detector. Othe...

Re: OT: An Interesting Encounter

While sitting in my treestand one day wearing a facemask a Coopers hawk landed 3ft from my face. Sat there for about 10min making its unusual call. You know you're doing something right when a creature that alert doesn't detect you.

Re: OT: An Interesting Encounter

About 2wks ago I heard something slam into the glass of my patio door. Jumped up to see a redtail with a dove pinned to the ground about 20yds away. He saw me but managed to get a short video of him flying away with dove in his talons. There are about 10 more that come for seed so maybe I'll see him...

I picked up the habit of dipping cherry skoal it keeps me from having to clear my throat. On numerous occasions deer have walked directly under me stuck their nose where I spit and never get nervous. I call it my cover scent and ask my friends if they want to try it. They always say no it makes my h...

Re: 2022 Hunting season

I spent 28 days in the woods and shot 1 big doe and 3 coyotes passed on multiple other does and only had 1 6pointer within range. Let him pass. My last hunt I watched 11 does feed in the bean field while snow pelted me in the face with a 30 mile an hour wind. Not what I hoped for but any day in the ...

Re: Crazy Crossbow speeds

I measure my success as a hunter not by how far I can harvest an animal but how close I can get them to me without being detected. I've shot deer at 400yds with a rifle and shot deer at 5yds with my 350se. I consider the crossbow shot a much greater accomplishment. Bow speeds are more than double tr...

Re: Limb failures

Three rivers archery sells 25 50 and75gr. points that are tapped to screw in your broadhead. Looks like a blunt field point. Adds about a half inch to bolt length but an easy fix.
