Re: Surburban Deer

You have to have 3 acres to hunt and a $2 million liability policy to bowhunt where I live, so there is nobody hunting. The deer are nearly fearless. There is lots of open school district property behind my house and I walk my dogs (bird dogs) off leash there. Frequently deer are grazing on clover ...

Re: Trying something new this spring

I've killed about 35 turkeys over the years and I agree with Jansey - a 410 seems a little light for turkeys. To my mind it would be in the ballpark with using a .22 rimfire for deer. You might succeed but you're probably under gunned. A full choke 410 is similar to shooting a rifle at close range ...

I've always used water when I freeze fish, never tried it with deer meat.
I just rinse meat to make sure the surface is wet when I freeze it. I don't fill the bag with water like some people do with fish. Filling the bag with water makes some fish fillets (like crappie) mushy, in my experience.

Re: Ticks on deer

We had tremendous numbers of ticks around here in the spring but I haven't seen a tick in several months, including on my dogs. I don't know what happened, but I'm glad!

Re: freezing deer meat

When using freezer Ziploc type bags I fill the sink or a large bowl with water then dip the packed bags into the water as close to the top of the bag as possible before sealing. The water forces the air out of the bags. You can also close the bag from both sides around a drinking straw and suck the ...

The way I see it every deer is a trophy. The smaller buck would represent a fine success and we would all welcome he chance to congratulate you on taking him. It's seldom easy and you deserve to be rewarded for your time and effort.

Re: Seeking opinions

It is amazing how these budget rifles shoot these days You really dont have to spend a lot to get a deer killing gun. Even the scope combos seem to shoot satisfactory. For under 150 yards. I helped a kid sight in a 300 dollar savage combo the other day with factory Remington Walmart ammo. It was a ...

Nice deer and nice shot! Are you a baseball Cardinal fan or is it one of the college Cardinal teams? If it's baseball, we have that in common (along with crossbow hunting). Enjoy your fresh venison.

Annual venison dinner will happen

My crossbow season so far has been frustrating and bloodless. I hunted about eight times, seeing deer nearly every hunt, but never fired an arrow. We have a four points on one side minimum for bucks where I hunt. Three times I had sub-legal bucks within easy range of my crossbow but no legal bucks (...

You have my deepest sympathy for the terrible position you have gotten yourself into. For the rest of this season you will have to live on the wonderful memories you have created while you hunt does and turkeys. Congratulations on an outstanding season!

Re: One reason I own a Excalibur

So true! And you can keep your Excal shooting accurately year after year with only simple adjustments that you can easily do yourself. In my (fallible) opinion, reasons are scarce for owning one of those complicated contraptions.
