Same here in Northern VA. It is supposed to get to low 90's here. I just came back from a late evening recon (drive) and saw quite a few deer in fields and pastures a full half hour before dark. It may be hot and humid, but the deer are definitely out and moving in the late afternoon. I'm not sure a...

Congrats. I've bagged two in one hunt with longbow, crossbow, rifle and muzzleloader. Got 3 one time with a rifle. None of them were bucks. Great job. You get in the zone and start thinking 'Somebody stop me!'. :) Quite a few states have no daily limit. Only a season limit. (MD, GA, AR,...) Some sta...

Hunt it again. Heck, just because you spook a couple is no reason not to hunt it that day. Especially if it is before daylight when you spook them. I've spooked deer walking in to my stand only to have them obviously walk down the same trail following me to my stand. I've actually had them walk down...

It is very dry in Northern VA as well. The apple and berry crops have taken a beating, but the acorn crop has done fairly well. So you will probably see a few less deer around fence rows and tree lines and more in the woods. I'll be camping out near a few acorn trees on Saturday.

That is just one of the many reasons I'm a proud resident of West Virginia after spending four years in Maryland with the military.

bj, Thats exactly what I did. With my hunting locations in mind I sighted in the 30 yard marker to hit dead center. Now I'm hitting: 20 yards: 1" low 30 yards: dead center 40 yards: 1" high 50 yards: ~1" high I can live with those numbers. I can aim dead center and keep the bolt in a ...

I may have made it sound more confusing. My second arrow was within 3/4 of an inch of my first (set at 350) at 50 yards. Both arrows are about 4" high. Changing the number lower has proven results. Unfortunately I can't change it higher.

VariZone + Exomax question

I've got a basic 2006 Exomax with the right stuff package and topped it with the Vari-zone scope. Using the GT arrows with 100gr field points it I can't get it to shoot in 10yard increments. For example, if I sight in at 20 yards... The top of the first diamond is about 2" high at 30 yards. The...

Yes. Too hot. I just got back from adding an API shooting rail to my chain-on and moving my 2-person stand about 100 yards farther up a mountain. I was dripping sweat just getting to my hang-on stand and climbing up in it. I bought some new scent lock hunting clothes but its going to have to cool of...

A fellow hunter turned me on to this one. He always hunts with a blaze orage vest with a game pouch. In his pouch he carries one of the cheap plastic roll up snow sleds. It is basically a thick plastic sheet about 2 feet wide and 5 feet long. Unroll it and place it under the deer; Cut a couple holes...

Benooneb, To provide the best answer I would need a little more information like the gauge of shotgun and whether you are pass shooting (longer shots) or hunting over decoys (shorter shots)? If you are asking for my personal use, I prefer 3 1/2" magnum Federal Premiums in #2 steel from my 12 ga...

I haven't fell, but have a neighbor that spent hours in the woods after a nasty fall. He had compound fractures in both legs and broke a few ribs. He couldn't move from the tree. #1 tip: Wear a safety harness. It can and will save your life if you use it. And a personal lesson learned from last seas...

Duckhunt - Teamless - From WV, but hunt Virginia.

There may be enough for two VA teams. Where I hunt we have LOTS of deer. You'll have to spend a lot of time up a tree if you want a big one though.

Timing the rut (Virginia area)

Mmmm. These steaks from last Columbus Day are going down well. :) I'm sure many people have posed this question before and I'm aware there is no exact answer. When is the start and peak of the rut in your area? I'm on the very Eastern Panhandle of WV and hunt in Northern VA as well. I plan to be in ...
