Re: ladder stands
I hunt out of three of the two-man stands regularly. They are only 12ft, but you can get a 4ft extension. I prefer them to the single person ladder for the extra room and maneuverability you have in the stand. The downside is that you really need to have two folks to set it up safely. I've moved min...

I agree. It would be a bit hard to pass on him. Nice buck. I still haven't seen a buck that size this season yet. Congrats.

Nice tender spike. Good shooting. Ground hunting can be a rush.

Re: Too hot to hunt deer!
Around here this year I saw lots of movement one day in July when it was over 100 degrees out. I couldn't believe all of the deer up and moving just after midday. That being said, I stayed home yesterday to sleep in and it was too hot for me in the evening. We can't hunt here on Sunday so I will get...

Re: Mines Bigger Than Yours!!
I agree, they should have a standard. But it isn't as easy for crossbows. For compounds many use the IBO standard which I think is a 70# draw weight, 30 inch draw and a 350 grain arrow. For crossbows you typically don't adjust the draw weight like you can with compound bows, so the draw weight porti...

Re: help with pass through shots
jacktar, Wow, that's a tough situation to judge. At 14 yards from 12 feet up, you still have a reasonably shot angle even if you were standing. Not too steep, but steep enough. That's a great position to find yourself in over any deer. Six to eight inches forward of center is great, but assuming you...

Re: Tracking
A few years back I shot a real nice 10pt from the ground. The shot was only 22 yards. I hit him a tad high. Above the lungs and below the spine.... I am completely confident the wound clotted up and that deer lived to see another day. I agree. I shot an 8pt in 1996 with a fixed blade broadhead from...

Yep. I prefer it to the GroundPounder mount which I also own only because it keeps the arrows lower and more out of the way. Both are great alternatives to the stock mount.frisky wrote:Is that a WYVERN mount on your quiver?

Meat buck on the ground
It felt odd yesterday painting two deer and a bear with crosshairs and not releasing an arrow. For the first time this season things just wouldn't come in to my comfort zone. It felt good to see other critters. Today I made the predawn climb up to the top of the mountain where I saw the bear yesterd...

Re: Good Reason To Keep Practicing During Season
That's really good advise. Even for crossbow hunters. It doesn't take much time to set up a target and confirm everything is still good. I shoot my compound every day if I plan on taking it out the next day. Some days I'm stronger than others.

I just threw it together in the garage. It didn't turn out exactly like I wanted, but its not a bad first copy.OkXbowHunter wrote:DH,

Re: Questions on sizing up a bear
I'm still interested in responses, but they have been overcome by events somewhat. I reread the regulations and a black bear only has to be 100 pounds live weight to be legal in Virginia. This one is definitely a shooter. I was interested in how to tell if its a 200 or 300 pound bear. His days are n...

Questions on sizing up a bear
Today I saw my second bear and its even bear season where I hunt. He never came closer than 48 yards. I didn't feel comfortable taking a shot on him at that distance. I was hunting on the ground and didn't have a rest behind me where I saw him. In Virginia the only rules are that you can't shoot a s...

Nice bear! I put crosshairs on one today for the first time, but he was a tad out of my comfortable range. Maybe I'll see him again.

Re: What to do with skull and antlers?
If you want to bypass the boiling part, here is an alternative. http://www.masterofskulls.com/ I did my 9pt from last season and I'll never boil another. http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k268/mayvillej/Hunting%202010/037.jpg http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k268/mayvillej/Hunting%202010/039.jpg Du...
