Where did you get the plaque for that mount?
I just threw it together in the garage. It didn't turn out exactly like I wanted, but its not a bad first copy.

Re: Questions on sizing up a bear

I'm still interested in responses, but they have been overcome by events somewhat. I reread the regulations and a black bear only has to be 100 pounds live weight to be legal in Virginia. This one is definitely a shooter. I was interested in how to tell if its a 200 or 300 pound bear. His days are n...

Questions on sizing up a bear

Today I saw my second bear and its even bear season where I hunt. He never came closer than 48 yards. I didn't feel comfortable taking a shot on him at that distance. I was hunting on the ground and didn't have a rest behind me where I saw him. In Virginia the only rules are that you can't shoot a s...

Nice bear! I put crosshairs on one today for the first time, but he was a tad out of my comfortable range. Maybe I'll see him again.

If you want to bypass the boiling part, here is an alternative. http://www.masterofskulls.com/ I did my 9pt from last season and I'll never boil another. http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k268/mayvillej/Hunting%202010/037.jpg http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k268/mayvillej/Hunting%202010/039.jpg Du...

Great crop of acorns

I've noticed in numerous locations around here that we have an awesome acorn crop this year. It's the best I have seen in at least 10 years. That probably explains why I'm seeing so many deer in the woods even though there are corn and soybean fields nearby. All of the deer are staying in the woods....

That reminds me, I need to resharpen my hunting knife.

You are a lucky man. Many of us are, just to differing degrees I guess.

Ok, time to sharpen up.

Re: miss vixen sliced her way into the 8 pts Heart!

Way to put'em down Smoke. Nice early season buck. I've used my dog on four recoveries and they are just amazing to watch. If they are big enough eat venison they are old enough to track it. :)

Congrats.

Duckhunt do you go to marks place ?
Yep. I've donated there to the Hunters for the Hungry for the past few seasons. I normally hunt the south end of the mountains just north of Hillsboro above the winery. So Mark's place is fairly convenient.

Re: Who else is frustrated with the wind?

Problem occurs when in the late hours the wind dies out and it actaully backfeeds the opposite direction. Thats what I hate. I feel your pain. When the wind is less than 10mph here, I can be guaranteed that it will blow across my hunting area in every direction each hour. My hunting area is on the ...

Re: Bloodtrail Ale

I could have used one of those at the end of yesterday's blood trail. I would have finished the six pack after the drag. Good idea. I remember a beer down south when I was growing up called 'Whitetail Beer'. I wasn't drinking age at the time but I've heard there weren't many repeat cutomers. D...

Big doe down.

After ruining a couple arrows on my final practice yesterday, I found myself up a tree this morning with my compound bow as I await a new shipment of Firebolts. I didn't plan on nocking an arrow or buckling on my release till shooting hours approached. I regretted that later. About 15 minutes before...
