Maybe part of your problem is how you are approaching your stand. I try not to step on the game trail as I approach my stand. No point in alerting the game that a human WAS there, even if the human stink level is not high enough to indicate he STILL is there. Also. how high is your stand? Maybe you ...

I don't have a bow that I would part with, but maybe I can help. If you want your location to be private, that's your business. However, it may encourage a response if you let people know at least what state/province in which you live. If you are Canadian, firearms regulations here would make the tr...

The fact the far shoulder was broken suggests that the lung on the far side may only have been nicked, if actually hit. She may well have flinched a bit at the sound of your shot and put your shot off from what otherwise looked at the moment of firing as a perfect "double lung". Glad you r...

OK. I'll throw my hat into the ring. I'm not attacking Woody or the accuracy of his post. I get a bit concerned though, when I read that sort of post. It has a tendancy to create bear paranoia. First of all, attacks like this are not the common experience of people who go into "grizzly country&...

Any dog with a bit of a brain can be trained to follow a blood trail. The key is training. Some will do it instinctively with out special effort to train. The one I presently own would need to have training as she won't do it instinctively, although when she was younger she did show promise. Now tha...

I thought I had all the bases covered when I started loking for my elk. I had a Maglight with their blue lens filter. I had my UV flashlight, and I had my dog. NONE of them worked worth a hoot. I didn't expect the lights to make a huge improvement; I would have been happy with SOME improvement, thou...

Can anyone describe the process by which the device works? It sure sounds interesting, but I would be more comfortable having some idea how it works.

Thanks

Venison is naturally lean, but the fat, if it has any on it, will go rancid even if frozen. Nobody I know likes to eat deer fat fresh or old, but when it gets old, it really needs to be trimmed off.

Hunting Report

Manitoba only allows crossbow hunting in the muzzleloader and rifle Big Game seasons. So, I had to use my compound bow in the current archery elk season. Anyway, I managed to puncture a yearling cow with one of those sharp pointy sticks. I didn't have time for photos. We didn't find her till dayligh...

The black coveralls would also be the perfect manner of dress, wouldn't they, if you were visiting an Amish settlement or a Hutterite colony on your way to or from your hunt?

Steve is correct about practising your shooting from heights before hunting. The higher the better may apply as far as avoiding game detecting you is concerned. However, keep in mind that the higher you go, the steeper the angle your arrow will strike the target. This makes it harder to make a doubl...
