Re: How I test for penetration
Personally, I,ve not been too impressed with Montecs. They are accurate, but don't seem to hold up very well when encountering bone. Most of the deer I've killed were with 125 Thunderheads and more recently, 125 gr Wasp SST Hammer which is also a 3 blade fixed. I used 125 gr Slicktrick this year, b...

Re: Where to aim?
Gravity only works along the horizontal distance, whether you are shooting uphill or downhill. In your scenario it is only a 20 yard shot.

Re: We warmed our gun barrels up today
No worse feeling in the world. I'd head back out this afternoon and look. Like Vixenmaster said, if you hit them in the gut they will lay down within a few hundred yards. The chances are far more likely you hit it too far back than that you both just grazed them.

Nice shot Wabi. You gotta love those plump OH deer! I miss them. Good thing you went out too. I know how rough it gets up there once gun season is over.

Re: Do you think?
It takes a lot of momentum to open up an expandable BH. I had the exact same thing happen years ago with a Rage 2 blade and that is why I don't shoot them anymore. My suggestion would be (as others have said) a heavier arrow (450 - 500gr) and a fixed BH. My favorites are Slick Tricks, Magnus Stinger...

Re: Deer Knife
I use a Buck "Zipper" It has a drop point and a gut hook. The gut hook is fabulous - and is where it gets the name. Opens them up like they have a zipper on their belly. I sharpen it to a 25 degree edge that will shave my arm at the beginning of the year using my Lansky system and on...

Re: Montec Crossbow
I shot a bison with the G5 Montec CS 100gr sitting on top of an Easton FMJ. 525gr total wt. 4 arrows had a 1" group at 40" with the BHs installed. It performed great on the bison too. 3 shots, 3 pass throughs. One went through a rib and came out absolutely pristine.

Re: Frustrated and tired!
Make a small natural blind out of some brush etc and setup on the ground. If you have some 3D camo even better.

Re: Hunting from a tree stand
Gravity affects the arrow along the horizontal distance only, so what you need to be concerned with is the angle of the shot relative to the ground. The graphs above are spot on. At "normal" tree stand heights in level areas the LOS distance and horizontal distance are very close to the sa...

Re: Tuning the Boltcutters
I like to align the blades of 3 bladed broadheads to my fletchings. That seems to work best for me. I have used rubber O rings in the past, but now I just rip off the fletchings, put on the BH and mark where the blades are, and then re-fletch. Since I re-fletch almost any fletched arrow I buy it's n...

Re: Thumb Hole grip
Love my Vortex and T-hole stock. Since I sit on the ground a lot, I'm usually up close and personal to the deer so I take the safety off with my left hand so I can "place" it off not flip it off Nice and quiet that way.

Do you cover the whole retainer? Even the part that touches the arrow?

Hunting Dog Song
I know this is a little off topic for this forum, but I thought some on here would really appreciate it. It's a bluegrass song about a man and his dog. I especially like the last verse. Just click on the video to hear it. Someone put a bunch of hunting dog pics to the song. http://www.bluegrassmuse....
