Re: slick tricks
I shot 2 deer this year with Slick Trick 150gr Xbow tricks (1 1/8" cut) and had very good blood trails. A lot of blood at the place of the shot and then a nice trail every 2 to 3 ft to the deer. My experience with double lung hit deer is that they do not make it 100 yards. The blood trail usual...

Re: Hawks Are Cool
Like others have said nature is cool and I love to be out in it. Regarding owls...I saw a show about birds of prey and owls feathers are made in such a way that they create no turbulence on the leading edge and therefore allow them to fly silently. It's why they can swoop in on prey without bring he...

Hawks Are Cool
I had a hawk fly in and land some trees real close to where I was setup last night. I just saw a bird fly in - a little bigger than a crow maybe and with a striped tail. But I couldn't see it. It moved locations a few times, and finally landed about 12 feet from me on a low branch (I was hoping he w...

Actual Shot Distance - UPDATED
Thought it would be interesting to collect some real world data on actual shot distances on whitetails. If you killed this year, post actual yardage of the shot and whether it was a buck or doe.
Here's my data so far this year:
Doe - 20 yards
Doe - 15 yards
Buck - 18 yards

Re: First crossbow deer
Congratulations on your first crossbow deer!! I can see that the hook is firmly set on you now!! :D A deer at 12yards - any deer - is a complete rush. I also have been shooting Slick Tricks (150gr Xbow Trick - but the same 1 1/8 blades) and my blood trails on the last 2 deer look exactly like what y...

Never lost a critter using them, up to and including big bull elk.

Fred,
Hang in there and try to learn from every encounter. It will happen. Good choice to not shoot at 45 yards.

From Cold to Hot - #3 Down A Day Later
Sometimes when things turn around they really turn around! I sat in a new spot tonight and was fortunate enough to shoot my first NC buck - a small spike from on public land - but still a first, and I am truly thankful to the Lord. I had checked this spot out on a map last week, and went there Satur...

Re: Range finder
Gravity acts to pull a projectile towards the earth (for ease of discussion say it pulls perpendicular to flat ground.) So when you are on flat ground and fire an arrow parallel to the earth, gravity will affect the trajectory during the entire distance (typically how we sight in). But if you are up...

Finally scored on #2 last night
After scoring on a doe the 2nd week of the season here, it has been a little bit tough. Gun season came in 2 weeks ago in this particular county, so lots of deer have already been taken by rifle hunters. Still, I prefer my crossbow. I had been seeing evidence of deer activity around some corn I had ...
