It's about time! The doe population here is out of control and the measures that ODNR have taken so far are woefully inadequate. I continue to watch bucks respond less every year to grunt calls, rattling, etc., as a result of so many does being available to them. Last night I counted 19 does in my f...

The King & I Part V
I knew that one of the three had “scored”. I could hear the hooting and hollering well before I was near the edge of the woods where the two pickup trucks had been parked. I couldn’t make out the words, but the tone and the cadence of the speech was unmistakable, it was celebratory. I also knew that...

The King & I Part IV
The King & I Part IV We always started around 2:00 PM on the day before the opener. I started the smoker at 8:00 AM that Friday morning in preparation for the deer shoulder that would need at least eight hours cooking time for my satisfaction. The wild boar loins would join the deer shoulder aro...

The King & I Part III
The King & I Part III You see it in big cities and small towns all across this great land of ours. The cities and towns change and the players change, but the theme is always the same. Go to any restaurant on any given morning and you will see the players. They are usually in the latter stages o...

30 of the 40 downed trees are now cut and stacked. This process has reminded me of my age. I'm thinking of selling my chain saw when the last tree has been converted to fire wood. I am not relishing all of the time I will be spending with my log splitter this spring. I will attempt to continue the s...

The ice took down over twenty trees here! Bad for the landscaping, good for my wood burner. We didn't have power here for six days. First three days we really missed all the modern conveniences, but after that, we kind of got into the pioneer spirit and made the best of it. The clean up is going to ...

The King & I Part II
The King & I Part II If you have not read my first post with this same subject, then this second part will not make much sense to you. So read the first one and come back after that and read this one. Or, if your dyslexic read this one and then the first one. Or, if by this time you are so confu...

The King & I
The King & I The season is over and there are six inches of snow on the ground. I have a rotten cold and have no desire to venture out. I have been sitting here at the puter visiting some of my favorite forums while constantly blowing my nose. I have been doing this for two days now and I am rea...

Do your homework. Look at the mix ratios of the big brand names, it’s on the package. Then talk to your local seed dealer and see if he can match the seed and price it. We grow clover. It is identical to Imperial Whitetail Clover. Our attractant plots are pretty large and the cost of the branded ble...

Re: Thoughts on deer hunting.....
I need to be more mobile and not get hung up on one spot. This should be rule number one in whitetail hunting 101. I stress this point over and over again and if there is one key to the successful pursuit of whitetails, mobility is that key. I stopped taking hammers, nails and 2 x 4’s into the wood...
