Is there ever any danger?.....yes, there's alway's a chance something could break or splinter. But in my opinion it's very small. I use regular old laquer spray paint plus that iridescent pink to high light fwd part of crest. Also used lime green. You don't need laquer for the tint, imho, but I'd get it if I could find it.
