Saxman, when I used to go to rendevous it was common practice to shoot one to three caps to make sure that the nipple was clear of oil etc. At one match one of our "old salts" (not a newbie) came to the line, placed a cap on his pistol, pointed it toward the ground and pulled the trigger. T...

For the past three years we have battled high temps in the 92-96 deg. range during bow season. A real break and it would be 86. This year it was 48 deg. last Sat for our opener and this weekend it was 47 for the low and 50 for the high since Friday morn with a cold wet north wind. Unheard of for thi...

The Texas season started cool for once. It was 47 on the thermometer this morning which is at least 20 degrees cooler than normal for the first part of Oct. Lots of moon up tho so most everyone had a slow morning. I had three slick heads come in and feed about 8:15am. I didnt shoot one on opening mo...

Texas' archery season opens tomorrow. I'm pretty much packed, but will finish and load the truck after the little one is in bed. Then up early and about an hour and fifteen minute drive in the morning. We are supposed to be cool(for us) and a slight breeze in the morning but turn to showers and stor...

During gun season I hunt out of an elevated box stand most of the time(shooting house). I like to get to the stand early in the morning,at least an hour before legal shooting time. This lets the woods settle back down and gives me the most incredible 30-45 min. of peaceful bliss that you can imagine....

stain

The traditional way to stain curly maple, like the muzzleloaders were done, is with an acid( I will try to find which specific one for you ). It turns the maple a dark greenish brown. I am sure that you have seen some muzzleloaders that were that color and wondered about them. The stripes in the curl...

"spare of the moment"????

I'm from Texas and I've never heard that in my life. It has always been "spur of the moment" around here, but since Texas is so large I'm sure that there are many dialects of "Texan".Love your stories though, quite a knack.

I think that the regs booklet words it crossbows are a" legal method" to take deer during the archery only season, so I would assume that it would apply to all who purchased a hunting license whether it be a resident or non-resident license. I also got to go to the Hunters Extravaganza yes...

Ft. Worth Hunters Extravaganza

I am really looking forward to the Ft. Worth Hunters Extravaganza this weekend. The Excalibur folks are supposed to be there, and I am wanting to meeting them. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. has changed the reg's so that crossbows are legal during archery season. This is the first that has been t...
