Other Swamp Hunting Spot

Hunted the 2nd spot I found a few miles from where I have been hunting. Got in before daylight and found the cornfield I needed to cross flooded. Found a spot where I could cross in about 3 to 4 inches of water and the mud wasn't too bad. I will have to break down the Sherpa Cart and put it in the J...

Vertical Bow Hunters Help

I've grown defensive when I bump into a vertical bow hunter in the woods. This was brought on by some of the rude comments and rolling eyes I have run into in the past. After I got the small swamp buck back to the truck a vertical bow hunter was there waiting for his hunting partner. He was very int...

Not done yet. There is a big 8 or 10 point out there. He's on my list.

Felt good to deliver the deer to a family that needed it.

Re: Small Swamp Buck Down

Congrats on the fine eating buck. Man, I'm impressed at your ability to overcome the logistical challenges to hunt that deep onto public land, with success, at your age. My younger brother and I are at least 20 years younger and the words "heart attack" were uttered more than once as we w...

Small Swamp Buck Down

Came in about 8:45am. I was set up on the land bridge where I saw the big buck. Almost passed on him but a needy family ask me to kill them a deer, so I shot him. I had a perfect setup in some downfall until he decided to do a 180 and start moving back into the brush thicket. Never showed any alarm ...

Re: 2nd Swamp Buck

Learn the area, and you learn the deer. Works every time! Good Luck! Applying that tactic big time. What I have to work with is small wood lots, windrows, sloughs and creeks that surround open crop fields. The majority of the tacks I have seen are along the border of the woodlots and windrows. I be...

Re: 2nd Swamp Buck

I my strong commitment and persistence is very important at this stage of the game. Leaving for our annual Florida trip the first week of January so time is of the essence. I plan on hunting every day I can if the wind and weather cooperates. The swamp buck would be a trophy to me no matter how smal...

Re: 2nd Swamp Buck

Deer or not Bill .....it all sounds so fun ! Keep at it eventually something will pop even if it's next season the things you learned will all complete the puzzle. Considering I knew nothing about the area I think I have made good progress. Saw a buck and have found lots of sign. This will give me ...

2nd Swamp Buck

Decided to scout a new spot so I don't over hunt the Swamp Buck's spot. It's about 3 miles or so from where I saw the Swamp Buck. I was not expecting much but did find several scrapes and rubs. The buck got pretty rough with a couple of the saplings about 3/4 inch in diameter. He broke them off abou...

Re: Crazy Crossbow speeds

I measure my success as a hunter not by how far I can harvest an animal but how close I can get them to me without being detected. I've shot deer at 400yds with a rifle and shot deer at 5yds with my 350se. I consider the crossbow shot a much greater accomplishment. Bow speeds are more than double t...

Re: Crazy Crossbow speeds

I was a rather serious and dedicated muzzle loader hunter when we lived in Saskatchewan (many many moons ago). Along came the inlines. I bought in with a Knight Master Hunter shooting pyrodex and saboted 45 caliber pills from a 50 caliber. Deadly out to 200 yards in the right hands. It was shortly ...

Re: Crazy Crossbow speeds

Why wouldn't a 500 ft/sc crossbow be much more capable of extending the ethical range of a crossbow. Most of us limit our shots to 35 - 40 yards with our Excaliburs. It seems that an arrow would hit at 55 or 60 yards at about the same time with the faster bow as it would at 40 yards with my 350. A ...

Re: Swamp Buck

Bill your problem reminded me of a farm l used to hunt. The deers goal every day was to spend the night up in a big cornfield up on a hill and the day bedding the encircled woods....problem was they literally never had a pattern it was like a chess game. When you saw your big buck walking up the hi...

Re: Crazy Crossbow speeds

What concerns me the most is the reaction from the lawmakers to the progressively higher speeds and some of the other technological innovations. I don't want all that spilling over onto the rest of us. When it is determined that crossbows have advanced to the point that they are no longer permitted ...
