Black Friday Deals

Not that any of us need any help parting with our hard earned cash, but if you run across any relevant Black Friday deals feel free to pass them on. Tis the season when you may be able to get away with a purchase or two for next season of a stocking stuffer. I'll start. 25% off of Tooth of the Arrow...

Re: Fun season so far but no big buck yet

I have become quite patient in my older age it sometimes surprises even me. You've got way more patience than I do. If I'm carrying archery gear, 8 points checks the box. 100" or more of antler (B&C/P&Y scoring) pretty much checks the box too. The only way I pass something that checks ...

That's a big deer. I wouldn't want to have to deal with him alone. Congrats on the bruiser!

Re: Updated: Muzzleloader bucks, #1 goes down

What was your bullet and powder weight/ choice? About ten years ago I started using the 250gr Hornady FTX .452 bullet in a Harvester Crushed-Rib sabot over ~100gr of Blackhorn 209. I converted the 100gr volume to weight so I'm running 72.5 grains of powder measured by weight to maximize the consist...

Congrats on closing the chapter in a fine way with a sweet looking bow. Some deer have more significance to us than others.

Updated: Muzzleloader bucks, #1 goes down

This morning's hunt was one of those when something good was bound to happen, because everything was going against me. I got up a few minutes early and I was even able to breeze right through the construction zone on the way to the hunting area. All signs pointed to getting settled in the stand a li...

Updated: Muzzleloader bucks, #1 goes down

This year I returned to my old pattern of taking off work a lot of November. With no shots fired the opening weekend of the muzzleloader season, I was amped up for a run through the normal peak activity of 9-13 November. On 9 Nov, my son was in the killing tree and I was higher up on the top ridge b...

Re: Muzzleloader buck

Is that a bolt on the rifle? I'm perfectly OK with people using them, but it seems wrong to call a bolt action rifle (if that is what it is) a muzzle loader. I guess I'm just ignorant. Yep, it's a bolt but with a different function. Savage, Remington and a few others have designed muzzleloaders tha...

Smart old bucks

I'm still not seeing a lot of daytime buck movement in Northern Virginia where I hunt. Sure, there is the occasional small buck but the big boys still seem to be mostly nocturnal. I've seen a couple nice 2.5 year old right after sunset, but the older mature bucks are still nocturnal. I'm hoping that...

150y is a long poke for a smoke pole, albeit smokeless in this case. Great shooting!
