Re: Hunting poem

Good one Gerald. I wrote a short poem several years back in tribute to a friend whose arrow was diverted by a small sapling. "Ode To A Bush" Oh scrubby fragile little bough You diverted my arrow i know not how The big buck stood fixed just beyond You steered my shaft off towards the pond Y...

Re: adjusted hunting techniques to climate change?

I scouted my swamp last Friday in gym shorts and flip flops. That's kinda normal for Alabama this time of year. When the climate changes I'll pull on boots and long pants.

Re: Question on venison prep

I have for many years "aged" my deer meat. I quarter my deer and divide it between two heavy duty plastic bags in the refrigerator 5-7 days. As beef is better aged, so is venison. It both helps in tenderization and flavor of the meat.
After that process in your normal manner.

Re: Hunting apps for smartphones

I have been using an app for several years now in our remote swamps. Works great tracking me and marking any waypoint with a variety of icons and even photos, which is neat. It uses satellite and topo maps and transfers to my iPad when I get home. It's called Trimble maps-there is a free version and...

Re: Calling - When to call & how much is too much

Here's an article from a fellow who claims to be close to an expert. See what you think. Cy "GruntMan" Weichert Playing the "Death Curl" Whitetails are creatures of habit, and so are hunters. Deer that practice poor habits, such as coming in to a hunters call without the wind in ...

Some rattling research

I came across this article recently and found it very interesting. I was curious if any serious rattlers on the forum agree with the conclusions: it's a little wordy but its 3 years of research. Rattling Over the next few weeks, deer hunters will hit the woods packing a set of antlers and some big e...

Re: Air gunning for Deer

Dennis seems like a nice guy. He comes from a family of inventors. I talked to him when I researched my article and he graciously proofread it for me before it was published. His guns are highly sought after and the last I heard his waiting list was temporarily closed. A fellow used one of his guns ...

Re: Air gunning for Deer

Hey Wabi, You may know about a Texan that makes some high-end air guns. He has a waiting list and if I was in the market for one my name would be on his list. Here are some specs. for the .45 he builds: The Ranger .45 shoots .452 caliber bullets and .454 round balls. Our barrels are firearm barrels,...

Re: Air gunning for Deer

Wabi,
Shot placement is the key for sure. I shoot .95, 125, and 145 gr. and it will shoot up to a 170 gr.- I will be shooting the 145 gr. at a deer at about 850fps. Probably keep my shot under 80 yds. or so.

Re: Air gunning for Deer

Congrats! Lewis and Clark had a .36 or .40 cal air rifle w/ them on their famous excursion in the 1800's called a "Giradoni"...........google it..... Awshucks, it was a .46 cal. that could fire 21 round balls in less than one min. It could penetrate a 1" board at 100 yards. Dr. Beeman...

Re: Air gunning for Deer

It's a Benjamin. I received it as a gift from my daughter & son in law. I wrote an article on the history of large caliber air guns and let them proof read it for me. They ordered one and stuck it under my Christmas tree.

Re: Air gunning for Deer

If I can harness a little luck I can add it to my list. Recurve, compound, cross, buckshot, birdshot, slug, center fire, and then air or rather nitrogen.
