Welcome Roger Coming from a vertical bow to a cross bow is a little disturbing in the noise department but you will get used to it all cross bows are louder compared to vertical bows but is o.k. it is the last thing the deer ever hears and if you keep your shots under 35 yards and shoot at deer that...

I shoot an Equinox and it is a fantastic bow but your choice depends on what is most important to you if you want a bow that is a little nicer to handle and cock get a lower poundage bow if you want a high performance bow that shoots flatter, faster and penetrates more get an Equinox . I have a covered sand pile stops broad heads great I shoot at a piece or card board with aiming spots on it or just a Styrofoam coffee cup stuck in the sand so I am aiming at the bottom of the cup it never wears out.

I am surprised you recovered that deer it does not look like a fatal wound at least not not fatal in the quick sense how far did the deer go?

Another thing to look at is was the arrow cut square if you get a poor cutting job on the arrow the inserts will not be perfectly squared with the shaft causing planing.
