Re: Ruger 30-30

Darn good hog gun too!!

I have a Mossberg 464 30-30. Sweet little lever action. I use Hornady’s 150 grain FTX 30-30 bullets in it. 1 1/2 inch grips at 100 yards on a bench rest and 4X scope.

Paul when your son is grown he is going to have so many fond hunting memories. I have always been grateful my Dad left me so many memories of the fishing and hunting trips.

Re: Feeling old....

Part of mine is age and part is change. We hunted same lease for 31 years. It was “ home”. You fix things up a little at a time and it gets to be more comfortable and more like home with every year. This is the 5th season since we lost it, and I have looked for another lease. I haven’t found anythi...

Re: Maybe Next Year??

I am trying to figure out their travel patterns in hopes of finding the bedding areas. Ambushing them moving from the bedding areas to the scrapes and rubs area is probably my best hope. In Oklahoma it took me a few years to figure them out. In the river spot I was on the wrong side of the creek!! B...

Re: Late Season Archery - The Ups & Downs

Your story reminded me of my Elk hunts when I lived in Wyoming. Chains on all four and always carry a couple of good shovels.

You guys are tough!!

Maybe Next Year??

2022 is my first year not killing a deer in many years. Between skin cancer surgery, flu/sinus infection and bad weather I only got out to hunt 4 times. The season stays open into February but I am leaving for our annual 2 month trip to Florida on Tuesday. The deer here rut much later than the deer ...

Return of the Swamp Deer

Scouted the swamp again yesterday. Only been about a week since I was out there. No sign last week but yesterday found lots of rubs and scrapes. What a difference a week makes!! 17 deg F tomorrow with windy conditions. May wait for a thaw. Running out of time to. Leaving for Florida 2nd week of Janu...

Elusive Swamp Deer

The areas I hunted last year had lots of scrapes, rubs, etc. This year all I am finding is a track or two. The fields were in corn last year but this year it’s soybeans. I got sick at Thanksgiving, just now feeling ok. I have only been out a couple of times but hope to get out after the rain stops. ...

Exomax Out of Closet Accuracy

Season opens here the 15th. I know I should have taken the Exomax out of the closet much sooner. Took over to my daughter’s house to shoot it. Shot it at 20, 30, and 40 yards. At 20 and 30 yards same hole accuracy. At 40 yards 1 to 1 1/2 inch group. I attribute that to the windy conditions and me. S...

Re: Public Land Dilemas

As long as I am physically able I will continue hunting almost inaccessible spots. I’ve had to camp out in my boat when I lived in Oklahoma. Now that I have moved to Alabama I hunt a swampy area. Rubber boots and on many occasions hip waders are required to access the hammocks. No one around in thi...

Re: Hunting Blunders. Asking for a friend.

Didn’t remember I had forgotten my cut skipjack catfish bait until I was in the boat about 5 miles upriver. Went deer hunting and all went well after a little over 2 mile walk in the dark. Got up the tree in my climbing deer stand then found that my quiver and arrows were missing. Climbed down and a...
