Re: Turkeys
I'll carry a 20 ga. I have that has a turkey choke and a red dot on opening morning. With TSS shot a 20 gauge is about as good as a 10 gauge used to be. 50 yard shots are not irresponsible. The bad thing is how ridiculously expensive TSS shells are. I may grab my crossbow later in the season for a c...

Re: CWD Officially in BC
Is baiting deer legal in BC? CWD spreads faster when deer congregate so steps to keep them from being in close contact can help to slow the spread of the disease. Well intentioned feeding for non-hunting purposes is just as bad as baiting for hunting.

Re: Once in a lifetime weekend on Nip
Thanks for the great replies guys. So took me 5 hours to fillet the 81 fish. One 2 hour shift and one 3 hour shift. Touched up the fillet knife once mid way through with a few strokes on the 1200 grit fine hone. Might look into an electric as my neighbour tells me they are the cat's azz. Although n...

Re: morning vs. evening
I don't have exact numbers but my morning vs. evening kill ratio is pretty similar to yours. Like you, I don't like the prospect of tracking a deer in the dark, though the only one I have lost I found the next morning torn up by coyotes. I also like mornings because I enjoy watching nature wake up a...

Re: 2024 Season
In 2023 I didn't get a deer with my crossbow and I want to correct that this year. I saw plenty of deer while bowhunting, but I never had a buck I was sure was legal (4 pts. on one side) or a doe come into good range. I shot one buck and one doe with a rifle, so I have plenty of venison. I only hunt...

Re: Last day successful hunt
That's a nice buck! It's good to be reminded of how quickly things can change. You were rewarded for hanging in there.

Re: OT - Advice on my new shotgun for deer or ....
Ithaca pumps are also bottom ejection just like the BPS. I have a 12 ga. BPS and a 20 ga. Ithaca model 37 featherlight. Of the two I prefer the Ithaca because it's so light and pumps more smoothly. Older model 37s are a little hard to find and, (as stated before) may require modification to accept a...

Re: CWD
Biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife are working with Deer Farmers here in Texas to develop a deer herd that is immune to CWD. Seems most of the problem occurs with "Farmed" Deer herds. https://landassociation.org/chronic-wasting-disease-in-texas-latest-updates/ Pretty informative arti...

CWD
Here's an excellent video about CWD presented by a biologist who specializes in deer. WARNING: several deer are shot in this video. I know we all hate to watch things like that.

Re: Snow storm!
It's 68 F. and comfortable where I am right now. Unfortunately, it's 9F. and windy outside. Our season ends Monday, but up where hunt it's supposed to be -11F. tonight and -8F. tomorrow night with a high of 3F. both days. Our deer are fat from eating crops for months and will probably lay low and ou...

Re: Got some snow here!
Our season is open until January,15. I can't get back up to the farm until next weekend. The weather forecast is for about 10 days of lows in the single digits and highs in the teens with strong winds. My freezer is pretty full from rifle season so I may not try a late season hunt. I have never even...
