The end of an era.

Today was a day I knew was coming and I knew I would be disappointed. Back in 2004 I was invited by a friend to hunt on a small piece of private property in Loudoun County, Virginia. It was small. 26 acres total until you subtract the part that is yard, lake, home, shed and work building. Then you a...

O/T: Finally some antlers. WV Gun Opener.

Saturday I took a walk on the near end of the public hunting land just down the street (WMA). I saw a few rubs, but not much. Yesterday my wife and I took the dogs for a walk on the far end of the hunting area and I saw a lot more rubs and a number of scrapes. I decided to set up in a natural funnel...

Re: love it when people get jealous

We do have a abundance of small bucks this year though. Boy do we. I've only seen one decent (>6pt) buck all year. I've probably seen thirty bucks and passed on a dozen shot opportunities. I never do that. Three of the antlerless deer I took ended up being button bucks  and one was a spike. Y...

Re: Public or Private - Where do you hunt?

I hunt a very small private lot (<15 acres wooded) in Northern Virginia mostly, but I live walking distance from 700 acres of public land in West Virginia. The Virginia private land is in a very overpopulated (deer) area. I can kill a deer just about any day I go hunting there. I passed on five of t...

Half-assed recovery.

I hate a half-assed recovery. :( I finally had a chance to take my son out yesterday evening with our smokepoles. Although he didn't see a deer other than the ones we jumped on the way out, he had fun. He saw turkey, fox and a million squirrels. The leaves are so dry here you can hear anything 200 y...

I agree. The deer skulls look neat. I've seen dipped skull kits that look neat. If you could combine the camo with skulls, you'd really have a cool pattern

Re: o/t looking for info on muzzleloaders

Any chance you can shoot it before sealing the deal? About 10 years ago I bought a Traditions Lightning LD. It was supposed to be a .45 caliber long distance model. It was pretty. It had a long fluted stainless barrel with a muzzle brake. With a 40 cal sabot it was supposed to be able to reach out t...

Re: deer decoys anyone use them? are they any good?

I've only used one once, but I connected on a big doe because of it. Actually, I used my 3D target. I set it up about 20 yards in front of my stand in open timber. I saw a couple doe walking through about 100 yards away. Hit a doe grunt and got their attention. They saw the decoy and the rest is his...

Re: Sunday Hunting.. Am I the only one who can't?

I live in WV and most of the state does not allow Sunday hunting. It is voted on by county. If it is allowed, it is only on private land. Those poor souls of us that aren't rich enough to own our own land can't hunt on Sunday. I spend most of my hours in the woods hunting on the opposite side of the...

Re: the fire is gone

My season starts in September. I get the same way after Thanksgiving. By then I am just burnt out. I have the fire burning again after the holidays.

Nothing rekindles the fire to go hunting like hitting one (or two) with your vehicle.

Finally a nice one...missed.

I've seen deer every time I've been out this season. It has been some kind of year for me. I've seen at least one buck the last ten times I've been out. The only problem is that I haven't seen anything with age. I did see a small buck that may have had 7 or 8 points a few weeks ago, but everything l...
