For hunting, how much practice do you do out of your stand

Post by Moxie »

For hunting, how much practice do you do out of your stand or blind?

Onced zeroed to my satisfaction, I like to fire a dozen or so shots at decoys from 10 to 40 yards in all postions. I also will set the decoys at 45 and 50 yards to know what to expect and plan not to take such shots unless it's a once in a life time situation.

I also practice opposite shoulder shots to be prepared for that situation should it arise and a normal should shot not be possible, since it has happened to me with a rifle and I've switched to the opposite shoulder and made the kill.

In short.....never  . I usually zero in my bow on the ground and haven't shot from my stand yet. That said, I think it is a very good idea. I had two tough tracking jobs this year and maybe if I shot more from differnent angles and heights, I would have a better shot placement.

Since I shoot up and down hills on the 3D circuit, I don't practice from my tree stands, unless you can count shooting at live deer.

Probably a good idea but we feel that it more important to keep pressure off the property as much as possible, including practicing from actual hunting stands. One can become very proficient through practice elsewhere.

On my property, a local farmer plants my foodplots in early August. At that time, I go in and clear shooting lanes, move/relace a stand or two and get ou until October 1. Then, affter January 1, nobody is on the property until the following August when the farmer returns. That is, if you dont include the local snowmobilers, and the tree stand thieves, and the rabbitt hunters, and the turkey hunters, and the all year round 2 am raccon hunters, and the guys running coyotes with hounds-- all of whom can't seem to read one of the 30,567 "no tresspassing" signs poster around the property. But other than that, the property is rarely visited by humans during the entire year. However, I don't include the latter group that I just listed as being part of that species!!

I've done a little practicing from my stand and have been dead on. I keep the ranges short. So far so good.

Time to change those signs to:

Isn't "Michigan Bill" the name of the serial killer in the movie Silence of the Lambs?

I believe it's a good thing to do for everyone, once or twice at least. When you go out to set up a stand or clear a lane or two, set up a marker or decoy at a few different yardages, just to be sure of where to aim when the time comes. You will not spook or change the Deer patterns by doing this once before the opener. and you will be sure of your placement. At twenty feet up, and thirty yards away, things will sometimes seem a little different than you'd expect. Always better to be safe.

John,,,,, I treat the crossbow the same as I do my rifle. I practice the shot I'm going to take so that when it come, it's just another shot.

:D I shoot at least every other day , any were between 12 and 24 shots. Depending on how good my back feels, my MAX can sure give you a work out   I have (3) 3D deer targets and (1) bear target along with 2 other bag targets. I have them set up at 20 , 30 , 40 , 50 and 55 yards. I use the deck on our old above ground pool as an elivated stand . I agree that once you are sighted in there isnt much more to do other than have fun shooting, and 3D targets are the best practice targets for hunters. GREYWOLF

I have never shot out of my stand. The thought has come across my mind.

Instead, every so often I will let a couple fly off the roof of the house. Same thing. Its relatively the same height as my stands.
