new hunter :)

Post by dakotart »

so i've only been hunting deer for a short while, mainly started last year during muzzleloader season.
I picked up an Excalibur Phoenix (man it shoots awesome!) + the accessory pack.

this morning, 3rd time out this season for bow, i'm creaping the very long distance to my stand tree, I spot 4-5 deer in the field to my left. I stop in a tree shadow and just stand there. those deer end up going down to a nearby pond and out of my sight (5:30am)
I proceed forward and go into the field to the right and make it 10 yards in and think that I have spotted another deer, but can only see what looks like the head.

i take about 1-2 steps at a time. then all the sudden, she stood up and was about 120 yards away (or so).
she startes grazing and would look over at my about every 2 steps and i would just stop moving til she put her head back down.
she started moving toward the woods where my stand tree is.

what happened next just baffeled me.
she decided that she wanted to check me out and came across the field, stopping to get some grass and clover along the way, and ends up 20 yards in front of me.

and then, proceeds to walk straight toward me to about 8 yards before stomping 2 times, snorted and ran off.

this is the 2nd time this has happened.
a tiny doe did almost the same thing last week. she appeared out of nowhere from around the corner about 15 yards out and walked straight toward me to about 10. by the time i decided to shoot through the golden rod weeds she ran off.

oh man, I hope tomorrow is as fun.

Sometimes they can let curiosity get the best of them. I've had them almost in my lap with a bleat call. Had a fawn within mere feet my blind (my 6 year old & I were in it) yesterday. It knew something was there, but it couldn't decide whether to run or not. It would take a bite of clover, look at us, sniff the air (the wind was in our favor), then get another bite.
All the time my son was whispering to me to shoot it. I told him it was a baby and he insisted it didn't have spots, so I could shoot! I explained to him how to tell the little ones from the adults (so he could understand  - big ears and a short nose  ) after it had gone off.
