some like going to get friends and look for deer... I have better luck alone since to many people tend to cover blood on leaves and everything gets screwed up, espically friends that dont have a clue what they are doing.
if anyone has tried one of those gerber lights and had luck, lemme know. Untill I know of it actaully helping.. my money stays in my pocket
This Gerber "Carnivore Blood Tracking Light" is a 12 out of possible 10 on the BS scale. The only way to make a blood drop or trail visible (even glowing) is the use of a liquid called "Luminol" (forensics use it). You have to spray the area where you suspect the blood drop or trail with this liquid and then, with the use of ultraviolet light the blood will, due to a highly complex chemical reaction called Chemiluminescence (among others an oxydizing reaction between Luminol and hydrogen peroxide with the iron in the blood's hemoglobin acting as a catalyst), start to glow blue. The Gerber does none of that. Even it it would emit a sufficient amount of ultraviolet light which it clearly does not, you'd still have to carry a big can of Luminol into the woods, making you look like a lunatic.

I decided to spring for the money for a game finder about 4 years ago. Candidly, they are 98% BS and 2% RS (Real S--t). They give out so many false signals you can not trust anything it indicates. It is a good idea, conceptually. However, the application falls very short. I am sure it worked good in the guys garage when he thought the idea up and tested the prototype. Real world in real time show I is a huge waste of money.

I HAVE A GAMEFINDER AND HAVE USED IT MANY TIMES TO RECOVER DEER. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS THE UNIT PICKS UP ON THE TEMPERATURE CHANGES BETWEEN THE ANIMAL AND ITS SURROUNDINGS. FOR THE MOST PART, IF THE TEMPATURE IS "COLD" THE UNIT WILL REGISTURE FAR BETTER THAN IF THE TEMPATURE IS ABOVE ABOUT 65 DEGREES. I HAVE HAD VERY LITTLE LUCK RECOVERING GAME IN MODERATE TEMPATURES, BUT EXCELLANT LUCK USING THE UNIT WHEN THE WEATHER IS BELOW 40 DEGREES. AT THAT TEMP YOU CAN GET ACCURATE READINGS UP TO ABOUT 60 YARDS IN SEMI OPEN WOODS. YOU ALSO NEED TO BEGIN TRYING TO RECOVER THE ANIMAL BEFORE IT'S BODY BEGINS TO COOL TO THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMP. IF YOU WAIT TOO LONG, THE TEMPATURE BETWEEN THE ANIMAL AND THE SURROUNDING AREA WILL BE LESS AND YOU WILL NOT GET THE "READINGS" NEEDED TO RECOVERY THE GAME. MY ADVICE IS TO DECIDE WEATHER YOU WILL BE USING IT IN MODERATE OR COLD WEATHER BEFORE YOU SPEND THE BUCKS TO JUST "TRY" IT.

That is not cold. 40 F is still really warm for deer hunting. Nice -25 C is cold but many of us live in areas with -40 C. That is Cold
May be the game finders just do not work well in weather those in the North call cold. I tried them in many different situations. Now it collects dust. I really would rather track. Very rewarding.

Well, I bought one of those Gerber lights, because I lost an animal in the dark this year. Found it 2 months later. It wasn't really worth the tag at that point. As well the yotes were so bad this year, that in the hour and a half it took to recover another one, they ate about 10 lbs off the 200 lb buck.
It was hard to get one as they seemed to be sold out everywhere (in the US). As well, in Canada, no one is willing to stock something I guess with such a gruesome name. The lady at the check out said her husband really likes his... Oh boy. Anyway it is not a bad flashlight.
Haven't used it to track anything yet. In a dark area the light does make red items stand out, which might not do enough when the ground is covered with red maple leaves and rain. I will try it and see.
I used one of those heat type scopes one night that the local authorities owned. It had a geat deal of magnification. You could see someone sitting in their car 500 yds away with a cup of coffee in their lap, in the dark behind brush. Or a moving vehicle further away, see exactly how many people were inside and tell if the bearings needed greasing. Only problem was the thing was worth $20k. It would definitely do the job though.

Now one like that would sure do the job.... The one being talked about use leds that depending on how many are lit tells you how close you MIGHT be to the source, no picture or out line. This leaves you guessing if its the critter or just a warm tree or bush
I think what wallymax is talking about is a FLIR unit; they are expensive and bulky. We used them sometimes when serving drug warrants to locate people inside before we busted the door. A cheaper(but not cheap) alternative would be a night vision scope that uses infrared as well as light amplification. They are more portable and are also good for shooting hogs at night(if that's legal in your area).

Bass Pro has a video on this lights. Here's a link. After watching it I'll stay with my LED.
One of the guy's on our lease bought one of gerber blood tracking lights my lcd light done the same thing on the red bulb. He was very disapointed, needless to say we all had a good laugh out of him.

I used a product called Starlight Blood spray, didn't work! It was supposed to turn the deer blood purple for easier tracking. Game tracker #2 was another financial lost, it was supposed to locate dead deer. The hottest target in the bush was trees. Live and learn. Ray.
