Shot Distance on Moose

Post by BigUgly »

O.K on a deer I have a self imposed yardage limit of 35 yards. I shoot an older 175# exocet. I know the bolt will travel farther and I 'm very accurate out to 50 yards but would never try that on a deer. I've always said to myself on a moose standing still, not nervous everything is pewrfect I would take a 50yrd shot. Is the unreasonable? Is this recomended? Would you take the shot? Keep in mind little to no wind, no brush, moose still broadside or quartering slightly away, I mean everything is perfect.

I would. Your bow will give you about 65ftlb at 50 yards and according to the arrow chart it takes 50ftlbs for a pass through on a moose so you have the KE. A moose doesn't move near as fast as a deer and the kill zone is larger so why not?

Sounds like you need a little re-assurance there Friend.
Ethic's is your only guide, you must make the ultimate decision, and when you send the bolt off, there is no turning back. That being said, I would take a 40 yd. shot on a "still standing" Moose with my Exomax. I do not like to take shots past 35 yds. But if an opportunity arises with the perfect conditions, and no wind, still animal, feeding or looking another direction, when quarted just right, I would take the shot. But at fifty, I would be to nervous. But you are the one to decide your own boundaries. :) I would do the same with my Exomag, but a 175 Exocet, maybe a little to nervous. I would say 40 yds. only for me. If you take one at 50 yds. with that bow, I will be very Happy for you. You deserve one Friend. Good Luck. :)

shot distance

Iwould take that shot without any hesitation, you've got a target roughly 3 times the size of a whitetail that has lungs the size of a small washtub and heart the size of a small melon and that bow will shoot through at that distance. With a good fixed Bh you would have meat in the pan.

I have yet to take an animal with my new exomax, but judging from the trajectory drop past 35 yards, plus the challenge of accurately judging distances past 35 or 40 yards,I think I would want to be pretty certain of my range before I fired a shot-too easy to think it was a 50 yard shot when it was really 55-or 60 and result in a wounded animal.I'm also debating whether or not to pick up a bushnell yardmaster-just for to make sure

if your stand hunting i always pace out my yardages in the shooting lanes with a bit of orange flag tape...then you know how far the animal is if it steps in the line of fire!
May the scope be clear and the big racks in range!!

I use survey flags as some of my stands are set up looking out on open field, no trees to tie tape to. Works good.
