Lost my best buddy today

Post by Sopchoppy »

My 4 year old beagle, "Tanner", hurt his back Tuesday. Have no idea how he did it or that he was even hurt until Wednesday. He didn't want to do his usual outside thing of running and playing. He couldn't get in his favorite chair, only get his front paws up and I tried to lift him and he yelped like he had been hit. Later, had to get him down and he yelped again. He, nor I, slept much that night. Yesterday morning he was more lethargic; took him to my vet. By the time we got there, Tanner was having trouble standing and his rear end didn't want to follow the front. Vet examined him and found he had a herniated disc. Gave him a steroid shot and some pills for later. Said depending on the severity of the injury he could show some improvement within 24 hrs. Got worse during the day; he had trouble even trying to get up. 2 more calls to the vet after hours indicated the damage was severe and nerves and muscles were affected. During the night he lost control of his bodily functions. Called the vet early this morning and took him in at 8 am. He examined him one more time and determined he didn't have any nerve reflex or muscle control and the condition was permanent. Surgery was only an option if it had been done as soon as he hurt himself and that was no guarantee of recovery. It's gonna be tough the next few days and weeks. Thanks for reading.

Sopchoppy sure sorry to read that and know where you be coming from. Had my two dogs to the vet as they got poisoned two months ago, thank the man above they came through .... However they are both showing after problems and just this afternoon I found blood in one of thems urine  Now I have to see which one it is with the NEW problem, both have minor problems after getting poisoned.

Hang in there, its hard but just think of the good times you and your dog had. My Condolences....

Always a sad day when one of the family passes on...... They're with us for only a short time and they always give so much to our lives...

Sop,

Truly sorry to hear that. I'm a beagle owner myself and it will be a sad day when the dog that I've trained and hunted with for so many years passes on. They truly are a buddy.

Gregg, I very much understand how you feel. I lost a close furry friend not too long ago. Every stinking time those little critters bury a barbed hook into your heart and when they leave they take a chunk with them. It is even worse when its something like this. It brings tears to my eyes to know how you feel right now. I am truly sorry for your loss.

Gregg,
Sorry to hear about your loss.
I have one that is getting old and it's going to be a hard decision as to when, and if, it would be more merciful to have her put down or let her suffer.
My hunting buddy lost both his dogs this past week. His 15 year old Jack Russell was lethargic one day and died the next, then his beagle hung himself chasing a skunk and broke his neck two days later.

Gregg; Sorry for your loss. Dogs in my house are family and it's always hard to put one down. Hope things get better for you. Take care Jeff
