What time of day

Post by Iamcdneh »

What time of day have you guys found to be the most active for deer lately? I'm hunting near Napanee and we've been doing mostly evening hunts but to no avail!

Sat, went out in the morning, best morning hunt ive had since i've started hunting. Saw 9 deer total, 3 within 20 yds. Went out sat night, didn't see a thing. This year we've had more luck in the morning?

Last year i didn't hunt very many mornings because i never had any luck? but this year seems to be a different story? Probably depends on the area and the amount of pressure for sure!

I've always had better luck on evening hunts, but it really depends on location. Where I hunt there is a large nature preserve nearby, and the deer come out well before sunset usually. If I'm in place near where they enter a feeding area I have a chance.
If I try to get to those places in the morning I'd have to go right through the fields they feed in to get to the travel routes, and I'd spook them in the process.
For gun hunting I can slip in on the edge of a field and sometimes get a morning shot, but for archery it's not possible because of the distances.

Judging by the number of shotgun blasts (across the bush in a corn field) at dawn I would saythe deer were in corn fields at dawn. I'm hunting the run in between the food and the bedding. That explains why I see deer in late morning and early afternoon but not at dawn.
If you're not part of the solution, you might be part of the problem.
