Lighted nocks...how to?
Lighted nocks...how to?
How do you safely remove the nock ends from carbon crossbow arrows, without damaging the shaft, so you can install lighted nocks?

I just heat the carbon around the base of the nock just enough to melt the glue and then grab the nock with a pair of pliers and twist slowly but firmly until it free's up. Then pull it out. If you hear the carbon start to crackle you need more heat. If you are unsure go to the bow shop and let the boy's there show you how to. Once you've done one and gotten past the fear of snapping the bolt the rest are easy! You have to just get the rigt amount of heat and force. Good Luck SH

Best way to apply heat:
- Press screwdriver against nock
- Hold lighter/torch to screwdriver
- Allow heat to disperse to nock through screwdriver
Or even better: (If there is a screw hole opening in your nock)
- Screw an old field tip into the nock
- Clamp a pair of vice grips onto the field tip
- Heat the field tip with the lighter/torch
- Once heated; pull on the vice grips
A good thread on removing inserts

I use electric heat gun, kind used for stripping paint. Apply heat to nock while turning bolt. When you start seeing glue oozing out a bit, pull nock with pliers.
BTW, Don't be surprised if the lighted nocks change your accuracy. Adding some 20-30 grns to the back of your bolt will change FOC.
I've gone to painting the back 7'' of my bolt with white laquer. Makes bolt easier to see, esp with florecent vanes, glue sticks better and comes off easier when refletching AND, best of alll, adds only 1 gr to back pf bolt.
