hunting with rain

Post by pduran »

Hi

I've read the question on how to clean/dry a riffle and have all these questions to you.

Is there any problem to use a excalibur xbow with heavy rain? Should i be concerned about something? Whats the best way to dry it in the end?
Will the string still works fine the next time?

Thanks

I like to make sure my string is waxed but thats about it. I wipe it down with a towel and stand it up over a register. I try to avoid any oils or anything else that may have an odor due to the close proximity that comes with bow hunting.
One of the things I always have in my pack is latex gloves, when it gets raining too hard I slide my phone into one and another goes over my scope.. Looks pretty silly but it is cheap insurance.

One thing I have found to be worth it's weight in gold is the set of "flip up" scope caps I put on my Maxzone. I keep them closed most of the time, and when I need to make a shot, I just flip them open and my scope lenses are clean as a whistle.

What do you all do about the rusty screw heads.

I realize its only cosmetic but I don't like seeing it.

Has anyone tried WD40 on their whole bow, after a rain?(not on the string)
After all,it is named after Water Displacement Test No 40!
This is a phenomenal product, and someone sent me a list of things it can be used for,and some of them are hard to believe, but it does work!

I have a glass jar of rust preventative oil a tool maker at work gave me and use it on the screws with a Q-Tip. I works very well I'm not sure who makes it they get it in bulk.

I drop a few drops of 3M oil in the trigger assembly at differant spots each year. I also run Q-Tips down the Kock feather vane track to clean it on a regular basis. Also wax the string and rub it in good.

Your hunting gear will fair fine in the weather as long as you dry it. But I don't bowhunt in the rain. The chance of losing the blood trail increases. Heavy rain will wash the blood trail away and if your game travels out of sight your in for a long day or two. Last year I saw an of article in a bow hunting magazine about how great the early season bowhunting can be during a rain front and how alot of hunter miss out by not hunting the rain. They said make sure you only take good clean close range kill shots to insure a quick recovery, and to prevent loss of game due to rain. I thought as bowhunters and crossbow hunters that was our responsibility, to take only good shots to insure quick recovery. I'm not saying its bad to bow hunt in the rain it's just something I don't like to do. Last year I shot a buck the bolt nicked the heart took out both lungs and he traveled 500 yards. We lost the blood after a 150 yards took two days to find him. If it had been raining we would not have had any idea the direction he travled. Good Luck Chris

There are a lot of benefits to hunting in the rain, it makes for a very quiet walk to those who still hunt, the wet terrain can conceal footsteps. Scent is also affected by rain, the combination of those two elements can allow a hunter to get into areas that were previously too difficult to hunt effectively.
I get more concerned about hunting at night, for the same trial following reasons. I just see it as another experience that needs to be practiced. Besides, if it were all easy than it wouldn't be hunting. :D

Another thing I do is apply a thin layer of Nyogel 760-G to the threads of my scope caps and battery compartment on the scope, as well as any flashlights I may be carrying that day to prevent water entry.
