Yep ... fun to get out for sure ... but they are not near as spooky as they are during the regular season ... the deer up North are coming into bird feeders all over and they look tame this time of year ..

I got a shot of the doe with the white stripe on her head by herself as the others bugged out yesterday , she stepped into an opening and looked back again ... it looks like snow but it didn't fall off when she ran thru the bush , so I'm not certain if it was snow or a strange tuft of white hair ? I glassed her with the binoc's in the field after and it was still on her head after they ran thru the cover ...

Image

I was pretty sure it was snow , but figured it would have got knocked of as they ran thru the bush .... they were moving so fast I couldn't get a clear focus lock on any of them ... Will keep an eye out for her another day ...

Image

I couldn't get close to them today .... but did see 5 deer along the river flats on the way home ...

Image

Definately easier to photograph them before and after the season ! .... When some bucks feel pressure in the area , them will limit their movements or even go nocturnal ... Remember these bucks early this year ... never saw the big boys at all later in the season ... getting the lens on them or an arrow thru them are two different things !

Image

Went for a drive with my wife later today and saw some beauty Green Heads gathering in the creek by the Mill ...

Image

Notice the difference in clairity of the deer shot above in low light at 1600-3200 ISO or the ducks taken in good light at 400 ISO ...

Im glad I gave RJ the tip on this spot

Post by watamach »

I did it so we could all enjoy his stories with his camera! I was at the same spot today and saw a big fat 10 pt with a big rack so keep an eye out RJ. Unfortunalely I did not have a camera with me but he was close enough if I did.

This spot would be a goldmine to hunt in season except for one problem......it is in the middle of the City and you can't discharge a firearm in City limits. Except 2 exclusions which are classified from other KW locals.

I am glad you like the spot RJ we will look forward to some more pictures I'm sure.

Does the back left doe have a white strip on her face? That's different.

What field are you seeing the 10 point in ? .... I was behind the abandoned house , South of the old silo for the 5 point shots ... Saw two does in the valley section ... one large doe has a stub tail and is easy to ID from a distance ...

I stopped by today briefly ... saw some deer in the logged out hardwood section .... but couldn't get close .

The land seems to have several owners ? ... I was told today , that the area were the general public use to park and hike , is owned by someone out of town that put the new signs up .... Another guy that I talked to today ( local resident who's lot backs onto the property ) , said he knows the farmer that owns one section and he walks his dog there as well ... He also said there is a guy bow hunting the South East section and has been for 20 + years ...

Anyway ... judging from the people traffic it is a well hiked area .... Still a great place to get some pictures .... close to home , thanks again for the tip !

I have seen him several times in the corn field that is directly across from the construction entrance. You can see that someone uses it to 4 x 4 regularly. I walk down that path and you start to see sign like crazy and the field is dug up pretty good. You are close to the swampy looking area which is the bedding area I have seen several good trails coming from. The first entrance closest to Best Buy is where the construction entrance is near.

If you have used the Waterloo Region GIS you can see that the majority is owned by one owner (developer I think) and the U of G has permission to conduct research on the property.
Copy and paste the link and you can see the defined property lines perfectly.

Awesome site if you haven't seen it before. It takes some time to get used to it but once you do watch out. You can get colour imagery of any property with property lines well defined.

Most Ontario Municipal websites have GIS locator. If your hunting properties are clear on Google maps then you have access to property boundaries through your local website. Check them out.

Thanks all ....

Confirmed today , it is a white streak down the doe's face ... looks like a scar area .... followed some tracks and found one of the bedding areas ... the other deer with her appeared to be a buck that had shed ...

Image

I enlarged this shot on the computer to see the white streak on her face better ...

I shoot a Pentax K100D Digital SLR .... but to tell you the truth I wouldn't recommend it .... If I had to do it over again I would look at another Canon .

We also own a Canon Power Shot S5 IS .... it takes as good a picture as my Pentax a it is less money ...

Here is a picture my neighbor took ... these eagles have been flying along the river in front of my house ... I haven't been able to get a decent pucture of them

Image

Sony Cyber Shot DSCH7 .... he got it on sale from Staples for $285 .

A great little camera for a fraction of the price of mine ... it would take awsome shots between 20 and 50 yards ...

Chris4570 shoots a Canon S3 IS ( I think thats the model ? ) and it takes awsome shots ...

Dont get me wrong ... my Pentax takes great shots in good light condition , but it sucks in low light !
