Anyone else make Custom Bolts?

Post by korey99 »

I'm looking to have some custom bolts made, and have tried several times to reach Greywolf, but to no avail. Does anyone else on the forum make them with wraps and 2" Blazer vanes?

Wondering what the options are...I'm looking for 2 dozen.

Thanks in advance.

cuistom bolts

Post by Big John »

There is a few good people on here who make good custom bolts. I make quite a few as well. However, Greywolf will guarantee +/- 2 gr. on his. and still sell them for a good price. Not much money is made from this trust me. Aftyer buying blanks, inserts, nocks, fletch, wraps, labour, etc. The Pride in making something more accurate and superior in quality is the reward. The same goes for String makers. For me it's a labour of love, and therefore I now sell them to Friends and hunting companions only. I would go with Greywolf, he will not dissapoint you. and if he charged more it would still be a good deal. His quality is superb.

Greywolf helped me get started making mine, heck he even sold me the materials and jig:) I wouldnt definitly try to get a set from him since he knows his stuff. I just make them for myself since I like taking a buck with a bolt I make. Plus I dont want to nag people to make bolts in the colors I want.

btw, the vane is exactly 1inch from the end of the knock. Most vanes are fletched close to 1inch from the knock(crossbow bolts anyway)

I just use a razor blade, just dont gash to hard into the bolt:) Then follow up with some type of adhesive remover(3m)

Not to dis your work, they look great. But I find that wraps add unwanted weight to the back of bolt and are hard to remove. Have gone to using spray lacquer. Weighs one tenth of wraps and comes off easy with acetone. Costs a fraction of wraps.

I rather like the extra weight (wraps) this when added to the front extra weight of brass inserts gives a heavier more KE bolt that is also more stabile in flight under a variety of outdoor conditional changes, ie: wind , rain, snow, sleet , etc. Speed is already enough for any game so losing a little for this is fine! :)

I've gone back to crest dipping in laquer, but for someone without the equipment (dip tubes & laquer) the wraps are a good alternative. They are hard to remove and the spraying with laquer would probably be a good option, too. Any one of the methods will add a little weight, but the improvement in adhesion of the fletching makes it worth it to me!
