GAME FINDER FOR WOUNDED DEER

Post by flbuckmaster »

I have tried several breeds of dogs but cant seem To find one that will track and bay a deer that has run off after being shot. I once saw an english bull dog during a very wet week of hunting track and bark at 5 different dead deer I had shot. it rained everyday, washing out any potiential bloodtrail and I doubt we would have had much luck tracking and recovering them without him (It cost me 5 Mcdonnels cheesebugers). I hunt with alot of disabled hunters that just cant go crashing through the Florida Bush like most of you guys. We lose alot of deer each year for that reason. If we had a dog that could be released on the track of a mortally shot deer, and track him to where he falls, and stay put barking till someone got to him it would be wonderful.

Anyone have any experience training a dog to"bay" a dead deer after tracking them. All the ones I have had in the past would bark while tracking but shutup and return back to you after he found the dead deer. (alot of good that does) Walking behind a dog on a leash is not out of the question, but would be very difficult in some of the thicker areas that we big buck hunt. What breed would you suggest? We would even buy one already trained if someone is trainer. I would perfer a small to medium size dog as he would be my constant campanion when I am not hunting. OBTW The bulldog , 15 years ago could not be bought! I Know a springer would have the instinct to find a deer, but can he be trained To bark until someone could get to him? jay

Try these folks Jay http://www.deersearch.org/ They may be able to point you in the right direction. I have a lab that will go to a dead deer but will not bay the deer. She will go to the downed deer and then return to me and will "lead" me to the downed deer. She gets real excited and will run back and forth in the direction that the deer went until you start following her. She hasn't let me down yet but she's not for sale:wink: . I can tell you how to train one if you have someone that can spend some time with a pup.

Jay, just google "blood tracking dogs" and there is quite a long list of groups that offer recovery services and a few that sell pups and trained dogs. Good luck  .

BLOOD TRAIL DOG

Post by osimono »

I've been using Blackmouth cur dogs for a few years and have found ALOT of deer with them. Every one was tracking by 6 months old and none barked on dead game. The barking on dead game isn't a big deal to me b/c if she's barking on a track the deer is most likely still alive and she'll bay it up. If she's silent the deer is most likely dead and I just call her back and follow her. I will breed my female next time she's ready and start a couple of pups [on real blood trails] depending on timing. Other benefits of these dogs: they tree coons and squirrels, bay hogs, work cattle, and make great pets. Mine are from LH Ladner in Mississippi. You can get alot of info on the breed on his website. Just search LH ladner blackmouth curs.

i can't say all will do it but i had 3 diff Beagels that would trail and bark & growl and get on the deers head pulling at its ears. i took up some time with them started by putting them on the blood trail of deer i had killed and followed. so i knew where the deer was. would carry treats for them. they caught on what i wanted very fast

I think Dan Hendricks has a pair of daschunds that he uses for trailing. They are excellent trailing dogs.

I am interested the bmc but wonder what kind of house dog they make. I bought a jack russel years ago but later found out that he was inbred. man does he have mental problems! I still have him, he stays outside now, but he really cant be trained. Beagles are great but I have found they really are not too smart and are hard to train.
