"A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is
someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable
to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to and including
my life.' That is 'Honor,' and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it."

The last time that I saw dad, he was being carried to his final resting place by 6 fellow Army servicemen. The flag that once covered his casket was folded with great precision, inspected and now sits in a glass case on my mantle. They played "taps" as he was honored with a 21 gun salute. The sound of that trumpet is guaranteed to draw tears from my eyes every time I hear it. Dad and Mom were laid to rest 350 miles from here so tomorrow I will pick up some flowers and head down to the National Cemetery here in town and walk around a bit thinking of him. I'll find a headstone that appears forgotten and set flowers there just because......... God Bless all of you that have served and continue to serve our great nation. Your sacrifices will not go unappreciated in this house .
God Bless !!!!!!!!!

I appreciate the honor now, even though I got none when returning from Nam. As a combat medic, I know those that I dealt with earned the respect they didn't get then. For me the respect is far less important now than knowing my country learning from our sacrifices; learned to AVOID starting an unwarranted war in the first place. Unfortunately we didn't. One needless and unjustified war (Vietnam) was followed by yet another (Iraq), all in the name of stimulating the economy; and to feed the greed of those who benefit from wars. (Can you say Halliberton? As in Take-the-money-and-run-to-Dubai- berton?) Unfortunately, history does repeat itself.
Well said.mikej wrote:the service men and women past and present deserve all our respect everyday and especially today. God bless them and thank you
