I'm with you on that Wes... no bears for me unless they're rugs!

In 1984 I was grouse hunting in the Nicolet National Forrest when I crested the top of a ridge and ran smack into a black bear. He (and it was a he) stood up on his back legs. We were about twelve feet apart. And he looked like he was twelve feet tall.

I had three choices. I could shoot him with 7 1/2 shot and piss him off, yell at him and try to scare him off, or soil my pants and cry like a little girl as I ran the other way as fast as I could.

Despite being told that running away is the wrong thing to do I chose door number three.

Thanks Laura! I didn't mean to sidetrack your thread by any means, I just thought they were incredibly cute :)

I'm sure you know this, Mike, but everyone should remember that there's not much difference in a shot load and a slug up close. Also, a shot load pretty close has definite blinding potential.

A terrific deterrent either way ... for any sort of critter.

Better if such things don't have to be done, of course ... but if I had to, I wouldn't hesitate to use a load of shot in a pinch.

PS: I know a game warden who busted a man in a midwestern state for killing a HUGE whitetail buck with a squirrel load (low brass sixes)! :? :P

I just got back from the property. Bear is camera shy but tracks ALL OVER. I discovered that where my camera was set up is a fairly large berry patch. Bear must visit it every night. I thought it was just passing through but looks like it wants to hang around at least until the berries are done. Then we have this 5 acre huckleberry marsh it may be interested in.
