I climbed into my stand, which is within walking distance of our house, about 30 minutes before light on opening morning (Oct. 1). It was enjoyable to just sit there as the day came to life. Just at first light I heard a deer walking in the timber but could not see it. A few minutes later the deer stepped out of the timber about 35 yards from my tree. I could see it was a buck but had to wait for him to move more into the open before I could get a shot. He fed a while and then presented a good 25 yard broadside shot. That was the opportunity I was waiting for. The red Lumenok buried right behind his shoulder. He ran along the edge of the cornfield and then out of my sight. I was excited because I knew he had a very respectable set of antlers. I waited an hour before I climbed out of my treestand. I went right to where I saw him go through the corn and found blood there. I followed a good blood trail as fast as I could walk. He went down on the edge of the corn field not far from where I last saw him, about 75 yards from where I shot him. I was amazed when I saw his size and his antlers. He is a 9 pointer with lots of mass. I have posted a picture of him on Boo's website http://www.boocustomstrings.com/ He field dressed at 210 pounds. That is a large deer even by Illinois standards. He is the largest deer I have ever taken in over 30 years of bowhunting. I had to call a friend to help me get him into the wagon I pull behind my ATV. What an exciting way to start the season
I shoot an Excal Vortex with one of Boo's custom strings. Along with Gold Tip arrows and Rage 3 broadheads, it is an unbeatable combination.
