String setup question? (ExoMax)

Post by cornwall84 »

First off I just want to let everyone know that I'm not an "expert" to crossbows with this being my 3rd season hunting with my Exomax. I'm definitely satisfied with the performance of my Exomax but like everyone else, I want the best setup. What do you all recommend as far as the best string setup for durability and speed? I also want a setup that will provide me with the great accuracy that I'm getting right now. With all that being said it would be much appreciated if you all would give me some honest advice as to what kind of setup I should look into. The string that is on my bow at the moment is stock string that comes with the "Right Stuff" package.

I have also been thinking about investing in a groundpounder mount since they seem pretty popular and I always find myself carrying mine by hand because I don't like it to be attached underneath the bow itself. If I do invest in a groundpounder mount is it still possible to mount a rangefinder mount and it still be functional too?

I want to send a thank out in advance to everyone who takes the time read my post and help out another fellow Excalibur user.

I would be reluctant to change anything. If you are happy, then leave it alone.

A fast flight flemish will give you a little more speed, but, add some vibrations. However, I think they are a little more accurate/consistant. If I were you, then I'd talk to Boo about the strings and see what he suggests.

The groundpounder mount is a good mount. I do believe it will allow for the video mount too. But, it would be best to ask groundpounder.

I guess the real issue here is . . .you could open this can of worms if you choose. However, be prepared to "pimp your bow". $$$$$$$$$$

Go ahead and cross to the other side. Pick yourself up some 3 blade, 2 " cut mechanical broadheads too . . .like the Trophy Ridge Stricknines or the Vortex mini blaserIII's.

Good luck!

Nope, fix it until it's broken.
A Flemish string ( I make my own) is both faster than stronger. But, they do tend to stretch longer and will need periodic adjustment until 'settled in.' Boo makes great string I hear and was kind enough to help me extensively when learning to make mine. What a guy!
As for groundpounder, that's your call. I prefer to remove my quiver when in the stand to reduce weight and keep the bow balanced. For the same reason I use a hand held range finder and scan to designated potential show points BEFORE the deer arrives.

I simply wouldn't mind some more speed and I'd like to keep as much accuracy as possible at the same time. As far as the groundpounder mount, I really like the looks of them and it would beat carrying my arrows in the quiver by hand. Since I'm left-handed it always seems to me that where the quiver mounts underneath the bow it always gets in my way. I'll definitely be getting in touch with boo and seeing what he thinks is the best suited string for me.

Are you all who are shooting the mechanical broadheads banding them? Crazyfarmer gave me some good input on the Rage broadheads and I'm thinking about giving them a whirl when I purchase some more arrows and broadheads. What is everyone else's opinions of these type of broadheads?

Personally, I prefer low profile (short) 4-bladed fixed heads called Slick Tricks magnums. Fly consistently arrow to arrow. So much to same POI as my field tips that I no longer practice with broadheads. They are tough and give my great terminal performance from all three crossbows. (Shot well from the Equinox I had too.)

I have never tried the Rage, I hear a lot of good things about them. I like the simple lever action type broadheads with a very wide cut. I use one or two rubberbands to hold the blades shut.

I have never gotten anywhere near the consistancy with the fixed blade broadheads. The Slick Tricks come the closest to flying with my field tips, but, still not as good as the average mechanical.

Try out the Rage and see what you think after taking a deer or two.
