Phoenix takes first deer!
Congrats Grey Fox.
I agree with the neck shot Grizz.
When it presents itself it is very effictive.
This doe was dropped with a shot to the neck at a little over 100 yards with a 270
She went down in her tracks and the other two deer with her just stood there for a few seconds wondering what just happened, could have shot another one right then,it's legal here.
I think this picture show the shot real well,it is actuall further down the neck that it looks.
I took this photo myself with the timer on my camera and it caught me when I was saying, come on take the shot now I have the deer in the headlights look.

I sometimes deliberately shoot 'em in the neck when rifle hunting, if I am solidly rested and the shot presentation is acceptable. Done properly, the neck shot is a very, very effective killing shot; they drop like a stone, often crumpling down in sitting position. Very convenient!![]()
Congratulations on your kill, and I'm glad it worked like it did!

The following afternoon, just three minutes after I got into my dog house blind I thought I had a second, but smaller doe, but a couple yards this side of her, a nearly invisible branch flipped the arrow right over her back.
Lots of folks say this is strickly an archer problem, but I have had the same thing happen with a heavy .45-70 bullet, too, just this side of a great 8 point.
She ran off, and a second, bigger doe began feeding into the zone, but turned away just before a shot was possible. Talk about heart rate going up! I didn't think there would be room inside the blind to cock the Phoenix with the string cocker, but it worked out fine.
This was my best hunting weekend in many a moon. I'll be back in the same area this coming weekend, and will drop a note if anything interesting happens. I hope all your hunts are working out, too. Gray Fox
