String recipes, endless, flemish?

Post by K31Scout »

I am brand new to crossbows and I have an Excaliber Exocet on the way and want to get a few strings made after the stock string settles in and I get a measurement.

I shoot endless 452X on most of my vertical recurves. I've noticed most string makers here and other forums tend to make flemish strings for Excals. Is there a reason for that over endless?

I also use 8125 and Brownell TS Plus. Has anyone tested different string materials and what is your favorite string for Excals.

Not up to date on all the materials for strings, but endless will be fine on the Excal.
When I make my own strings I usually make endless, but I use dacron.

I prefer Flemish Twist over Endless loop for two reasons:
  • 1.) The end loops contain the same number of strands as the string (i.e. double that of an endless)
2.) Flemish Twist Strings are more conducive to brace height adjustments.
As far as the string material type, I personally use TS1 Plus which is a 100% HMPE material and very similiar to Fastflight.
BCY 8125, which is 92% Dyneema (another name for Fastflight) and 8% SK65 is also a good material to use.

Just stay away from string materials that contain a high percentage of Vectran, as it isn't forgiving and can damage your limbs..

You will find that everyone has their own preference. I like the flemish the best because it looks good to me. I also like the way it twists. Somehow it twists tighter and I've seen tests that give it a foot or two more per second over the same strand/material endless loop string.

I do have a 452+ string that I like a lot. I actually like the stiffer materials and haven't had any damage to my limbs . . .yet.

My suggestion . . .do not get skinny. The thicker strings are more accurate due to less vibrations and it creates a better seat for the nock. A little slower, but, worth it.

If you already have 452+, then I'd use it. It makes a very good string. Seems like someone else was on here a while back and was going to use 452+. I wonder who that was and how they turned out for them.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.

My BYC 452X is faster by 4fps than 8125 on my vertical recurve and quieter by a lot. It's not a stretchy string at all due to the little bit of Vectran in it but has not damaged my Korean ILF carbon-glass limbs yet after more than 3 years and 1000's of shots. All bows are different though and my Exocet might hate the stuff.

I like Flemish B50 Dacron on my old vintage recurves but I have always used endless on my modern bows. I hate the unending stretch of Dacron.

My string maker has just about every material available but only does endless. They twist up as easily as flemish but maybe I'll need him to pad the loops some. Once 452X breaks in it will never stretch or creep again.

I'm open to all suggestions.

Try getting in touch with Boo . . .the website is in my signature. He has been making custom strings specifically for Excalibur bows for a long time. He will be happy to answer your questions.

Good luck!
