Dry Fire

Post by Pun'kin Slinger »

I pulled a real boner tonight. I came out of the woods, got out my shooting block and DRY FIRED my Ibex to un-cock it! I forgot to load my target bolt before firing. I looked the bow over and it looked ok, so I re-cocked it and fired into the block at 10 yards. It was dead on. How do I know if the bow was damaged?

It sounds like your ok. Take a cotton ball and run it over the limbs. If theres a hard to see crack it should catch on it. But if you dont see anything with the naked eye then your likely ok. I have dry fired twice  the first time no spliters, the 2nd time a very noticable splinter happened. What string did you have on her?? are you using the sts?

I forgot to add, you should consider un-cocking your bow using the cocking aid. It could save your limbs if you dry-fire, or possibly an arrow if you fire into the ground. Once you do it once it becomes second nature.

I assume Excel strings came as standard with the bow.

Yes, I beleive your right. From what I understand if a Fast flight flemish string was used then splintering is more likely. Its what I had on mine when I splintered my limb. Hope everything is good on the bow P.Slinger! Glad to hear she still shoots well.

Nothing like that feeling. The initial denial is hard to get over. I kept looking for the arrow and knew in my heart it had simply disappeared. No way I could have dry fired.

Lesson learned. Get back out there and enjoy.

Unlocking the bow using the rope cocker is simple, fast and safe. Check it out in video on the Excal site. I do it with my compound as well.
BTW, if you are not using a rope cocker to cock your bow, by all means get one. Centers the string consistently each time as well as making uncocking a breeze.
