Bird #1 down

Post by TPM »

VixChix and I had a great morning out with Uncle Fester this morning. We set up in a field hoping to catch them off the roost but things were pretty quiet at the start. Around 7:30 we spotted 6 jakes on a hill side in a neighbouring field. Ken started in on the calling hoping to draw these guys in to our decoys. They were quite stubborn at first, not wanting to move but eventually the dominant one (who quickly earned the nickname "Superjake") caved and started heading our way. One by one they started hopping the cedar rail fence and then they got hot. Superjake lead the way displaying and even gobbling on the way in. I had a bead on him when he got in to range but these guys ware staying bunched up and not allowing a clear shot. Finally he was far enough away from the other birds and as soon as his head popped up my vintage 16ga. Ithaca sent a cloud of #6's his way and he dropped like a rock. He weighed in at 17 pounds, 4 1/2" beard. As I shot Vix had a bead on another bird but again they were too close together so she held back. The other five birds soon high-tailed it out of there.

We spent the rest of the morning hunting a couple of other properties and had some great action at one of them. We had a flock of five hens, three jakes and a tom come out but there was a very dominent hen leading them and we couldn't coax the stubborn old girl to bring them our way. Had a great time watching them and watching the tom displaying from across the field.
All in all a great morning with Uncle Fester. Those of you who have hunted with him know he has some great properties, does a great and sincere job trying to put you on birds and is a pleasure to go afield with.
Thanks Ken!
