I remember reading somewhere about a guy who used chunks of those green mosquito coils - he just stuffed pieces into the grate of the ThermaCell, and tied a piece of thin cloth to keep them in place. I'm pretty sure I posted a link on a thread about it here a couple of years back - also one about retrofitting the canisters with a valve at the bottom. I like Pyd's method better!

Great DIY demo, made and filled 3 today, slick as snot. Drill press made it easier. Had to experiment with the size of wire piece needed to refill but not for long.
Have made some pads using dissolved mosquito coils but not satisfied with results, will be checking with fly spray next.

Incurable tinkerer.

Check out post # 13 on this thread for how this guy uses the coils:

You can buy the same chemical at the pet shop, It is sold as a tick/flea deterrant. Just a drop or two on the old thermacell pad and its good as new. The name escapes me but I will find out tomorrow what it is.

Bio Spot - Spot On for Dogs (45% Permethrin)
K9 Advantix. (44% Permethrin)
ProTICol (66% Permethrin)

All of the above are available from http://www.1800petmeds.com/
K9 Advantix is the most expensive. Bio Spot and ProTICol are similar in price per 6doses, but ProTICol is almost 50% stronger....there could be 50% less volume in each dose though...I don't know.
You can also get it as a spray for your clothes.
http://www.repel.com/ProductCategories/ ... Permanone/
I use this stuff....spray down my camo, tents, sleeping bags, etc. Good stuff.
I haven't tried a Thermacell yet, but if it works as well as the Permanone spray, it must be good stuff.

There's also "Gordon's Permethrin-10 Horse Livestock and Premise Spray".
Comes in a much larger bottle...about 1 quart, IIRC, for $20 at a feed, tack or farm store, but the MSDS says it contains petroleum distillates and the "smell" is supposed to deter flies, so i'd be less inclined to try it, especially when trying to keep scent to a minimum. plus it's only 10% Permethrin.

it's great to dilute and spray the foundation of your home to keep ants out though.

Got some permethrin at tsc, 45% any idea how much to put on a used pad? If it works it will be great. 27cc for around 13$. Help Please.
Thanks, Stosh

the original pads weight 0.08oz, which is equiv weight to about 2 ml of water, and contain 22% d-allethrin (permethrin)

assuming concentrations of d-allethrin vs permethrin are equivalent, the weight per volume of your concentrate is close to water, and the majority of the weight of the pads is the solution, then I'd say you could try to get them to take up 1ml of your 45% concentrate.

I'm assuming you have some sort of squeezable single use ampules? I'd probably get a small glass bottle with an eye dropper from a pharmacy, empty the ampules into it and then use the dropper to put 3-4 drops on the mat. give it a try....see if it works like you'd think the originals do. You can keep the dropper in your pack and refresh as needed. Drop right on the lit Thermacell.

Thanks, I tried the needle trick, worked great, A zippo tip was just a little big but a little sandpaper and it fit in, The tip cannot be flat. Must have and angle or groove in it. Filled in about 60 seconds,
Thanks, Stosh
