Great read! That story could have easily been told by any one of a thousand hunters I'm sure; one thing I'll never forget from my first archery kill was the sound of the arrows impact, that sharp *CRACK* as the arrow found it's mark....good times.

Heck I didn't get my first kill until I was, let's see 30'ish? And I have hunted every year since I was seven & most of those have been archery, muzzleloader, then modern gun, then back to archery again! Spending sometimes as many as 40 - 50 days in the field per season (not always but there have been a few like that).

Finding a decent place to hunt is the hardest part if you don't own or lease a place. It sucks to be a peasant in this new roman empire, it surely does.

MarkMarine,

That is one of the best deer hunting stories I have ever read here. Thank you.

A lot of people have had the experience of shooting a big buck their first time out, but I think more of us have stories like your's.

I started hunting deer with compound bow and rifle at the age of 16 (Note: I said "hunting", not "shooting"). I didn't shoot my first deer (a doe) until the age of 22 and that was with a rifle. My 2nd deer, again a doe and again with a rifle, didn't come until I was 28. That was when I hooked up with some great guys; experienced hunters who took me under their wing. After that, the deer started coming more regularly, including some nice bucks, although my first buck didn't come until I was 30 years old.

I've been hunting with my Exocet for over 10 years now, and its helped fill our freezer most years, but I've yet to shoot a buck with my crossbow (Note: I said "shoot". We won't talk about the bucks I've missed  ).

It has been a pleasure to converse with hunters who have an appreciation of aiding success. I have enjoyed reading many of the post here and honestly think I am the better for having done so. I wish to thank all those who have posted courteous responses to this story as well as all those who have lent their wisdom in the other venues on this forum.

It is good to be in the company of such fine folk.
